Anybody just not care about John Wick?

I generally enjoyed the movie and the action was great. But I have little reason to root for Wick. The guy doesn't have much of a personality. If they kill him, I wouldn't care.

Heck, I found Cassian to be more interesting and started rooting for him after a while.

This movie is more about the myth around John Wick, how other people react to John Wick, the Boogeyman coming for them, than John Wick himself.

John Wick is obviously a charicature, a cartoonish character that is able to kill hundreds of people without ever really being near death.

Although he seems to get hit by a lot of cars and stabbed in the side pretty regularly.

He heals pretty fast too ;-)

Whatever personality he does have, you see it whenever he delivers some of those sweet one-liners. But the point of his character is that he's not supposed to have a personality. After losing everything that meant to him, he understandably became a more stoic, laconic, and generally unhappy man. His reputation as the ultimate assassin known as "the boogeyman" only works better for the character.

As for rooting for him, while the guy might've spent his life as a vicious hitman, he clearly wanted to leave all of that behind and turn his life around. And of course he did, but... you know what transpired in the first film that made him come back. So yeah, to me it's easy to root for someone as cool and somewhat conflicted as Wick.

Drac:
That's exactly why I rooted for the character of Wick, too. He was shown to be emotionally devastated by his wife's passing in the first flick, and is still dealing with the grief in part 2. In other words, despite his specific set of lethal death-dealing skills, he's not just a robotic killing machine---he's shown that he's human and is tired of the life and wants to get the hell out asap, but prior conflicts and issues make that near impossible this time around. Also, it gets to the point where everyone and their mama is gradually trying to off him, one step at a time. That definitely made him and what he goes through in the film more compelling to watch. Plus Keanu is near smoking hot in it,lol. One of my favorite action scenes in the film is when a whole gang of men come after him in the museum or wherever it was, and after each one he takes out, he has to grab their ammunition to keep reloading his gun, over and over again, since he keeps running out of bullets for obvious reasons. I thought that was actually kind of realistic for an action film----you don't often see that done in these kinds of films, lol. I also liked the fact that the film didn't use a lot of CGI for the fight scenes or anything else--that was refreshing, too.

realistic? LOL

reply

Yeah, they should have made him black.

reply

Maybe a black man should of tried out for the part.

reply

With a racist conspiracy against him?

reply

Lol what?

Yes, Cassian had totally honorable intentions. He was in charge of protecting his boss and when she was killed he had to seek vengeance. You could see that John Wick respected Cassian and that's why he didn't kill him outright.

Yes, I cared about John Wick. So much so I saw the movie twice. Keanu Reeves was perfect. So perfect. Rome and the baths and hotel sanctuaries. Every scene was choreographed. I liked Cassian and Wick walking in crowded walkways and shooting at each other even with millions of people around and no one knew accept them. Cassian's role was like a Roman soldier who protected his leader till death. But Wick getting back his car so he could retrieve his wife's card in glove compartment - that's another death to the end. Yeah, I loved this movie and I love John Wick. For those who haven't seen it, go see it. But make sure you see it in a theatre with a big screen. I saw the first one on TV one night and I thought - this is really good. It's kind of a guy's movie. Maybe. I'm not a guy and I just love this move. Both movies.

reply

Twice? Seriously?

reply

He's such a badass, how could you not love him?

reply

A lot of it is about fairness and justice, although not the legal kind, so, yeah, I was definitely rooting for him.
