Good acting and good directing. But it's a bad movie. I'll tell you why.

Because it commits the one, main deadly sin that destroys a movie. It's boring.
You could have William Hurt, Sam Rockwell and Philip Seymour Hoffman directed by Scorsese, it wouldn't matter one damn bit when the movie is boring.
Yes, I know it's a "slow buildup" but it's BORING. And it didn't have to be. Lots of good movies have "slow buildups" or are generally slow, but they are still good.

And here comes the bit that's going to pull everybody's panties into a collective twist:
I turned it off after about one hour. Because it was boring.
I like art films, I admire the works of Von Trier, Malick and Wes Anderson. I do not demand constant action. I demand not boring.

I loved it, but am a huge Kurt Russell fan and after watching the movie I can understand why the current generation of movie goers would not like it. There is not enough explosions, so why don't you go watch a Michael Bay movie, it's more up your alley.

You are mixing objective qualities with subjective ones.

I watched it at home on On Demand the night it was released. People let me tell you it is AWESOME! Don't miss this film! I paused it once about halfway as an intermission and then it finished in a blur. Yes, before I knew it the movie was over. Good acting, directing, and the sound effects were . . . squishingly delightful. Also one of the most gruesome scenes ever filmed is presented before your very eyes! Not a boring moment as the four main characters try to formulate a plan as well as a relationship amongst themselves. It's a MUST SEE if you like westerns!

So, rgsigler , which one of the cast members do you represent?

- Or are you actually Kurt Russell? LOL .......

reply

I don't represent anyone from the film. I just praise a well made film which was produced on a shoestring budget. I like the four main actors and their bodies of work. Yes, I'm a huge Kurt Russell fan. I have also read two of Zahler's novels and enjoyed them. Like Bone Tomahawk they are unique and character driven. Read Wraiths of the Broken Land and you'll know what I'm talking about. This is not a film everyone is going to like, but seeing it with an open mind helps.

This made me laugh.

"Whatever happened to Fay Wray?"

boring !?? lol

man you need to get a life. that's the only boring thing i can sense here.

reply

You are completely correct , and i am sorry to have to admit that. The acting was what you would expect from experienced actors nothing more , the story was ok and the cinematography and score were fine , but the film was just boring with little bits of stupidity thrown in to carry the characters choices, those who have been extolling the film from the rooftops on here watch far too much Sesame Street or Teletubbies because after reading the comments on here regarding this its pretty clear to misquote a phrase "that IQ's dropped sharply while i was away"

reply

Nailed it, thanks for this. I don't blame any 12 year old keyboard hero for liking and defending it, but the pile of horse$hit I read from some "critics", there's just no excuse for this. A brave, all US-style hero story makes up for 60-90 points itself, no matter how badly the whole thing sucks actually!? And it did, big time. Just plane boring and stupid beyond belief.

lol
Yes we care deeply, it is fascinating that one would watch half a movie then write a negative review, hell, just fast forward to the dinner scene genius.

You hate Congress but every election you re-elect YOUR "guy" and wonder why things never change!

IT should never take longer than an Hour in any movie to real you in, so your remark is pointless.

Same as my remark commenting about your comment :)

I agree man, However I watched it all. Trust me, you didn't miss much other than 1 or 2 good moments between the cave dwellers.

The only real great part was the spit roast scene.

Like I don't personally by the fact that a cripple, crawls his way to the cave on his own and takes out 8-9 Cave dwellers pretty un-realistic.
