Good acting and good directing. But it's a bad movie. I'll tell you why.

Because it commits the one, main deadly sin that destroys a movie. It's boring.
You could have William Hurt, Sam Rockwell and Philip Seymour Hoffman directed by Scorsese, it wouldn't matter one damn bit when the movie is boring.
Yes, I know it's a "slow buildup" but it's BORING. And it didn't have to be. Lots of good movies have "slow buildups" or are generally slow, but they are still good.

And here comes the bit that's going to pull everybody's panties into a collective twist:
I turned it off after about one hour. Because it was boring.
I like art films, I admire the works of Von Trier, Malick and Wes Anderson. I do not demand constant action. I demand not boring.

Boring is, to boring people.

You don't know much about the pacing of classic Westerns, do ya.

reply

There is a thin line between Pacing and waiting 1hour 45 minutes for something exciting.
OH and this is by far off being a classic Western.

I'm sorry you have such a low attention span, you clearly don't speak for everyone though. This is a film, not a videogame. A lot of people actually enjoy something called "story" in their films.

I'm guessing Michael Bay is more your style.

reply

this movie was ok but kurt russel and all these great actors were wasted on this story as a horror movie it doesnt work they just should make a classic western with no cannibal tribes involved.
example The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
is a nice western movie

The choice to don't put a soundtrack made a huge void that the movie didn't fill. It also lacked drive which resulted in that it feels long.

reply

I'm sympathetic to what you're saying, but in fairness, you didn't watch the movie. I wouldn't necessarily call it boring, no but I did feel that they could have gotten to the point a bit quicker. Once they get where they are going it really is quite good, but I understand why some, like you, would give up along the way. And I disagree with your premise that it's a bad movie. Because a movie bores me doesn't make it a bad movie. It's just that I'm not the audience for that movie.

I agree, and I should have stopped as well, except afterwards I went back to watch the more boring 2nd half of "hateful eight", another snoozer that goes for nearly 3 hrs of booooring. Yes, slow is one thing, boring is another. And the gore was overdone, I guess to try and make up for the boring, even the ride em cowboy bedroom scene was boring, and a blatant "excitement" add in for ratings and thrills (not) .

reply

I thought it was entertaining throughout.
Although I admit I did have my dad to banter with and comment on the movie so I guess the setting could have affected that.

I can imagine I would be quiet bored as well if I watched it on my own.

Zardoz (1974) has spoken!

Your post (The Op) was incredibly boring. I just glanced to the next post after a few words and skipped the rest of the yawn.

I actually thought the first half of the movie was better then the last. Liked the dialogue.
