Is a well written and acted film with a great social statement, but simply cannot match the stylistic mastery and beautiful/brutal story of The Revenant.

shareI wholeheartedly disagree with you (respecting your opinion, of course). Whilst i agree that The Revenant was a visually compelling stunning cinematic experience with a great performance from Leo DiCaprio, it otherwise felt tedious, inflated and overlong, occasionally becoming one-note and lacking anything richer. Spotlight on the other hand had a number of great performances, a harrowing narrative, a solid direction and has left an impact on me two weeks after seeing it, which is more than can be said about The Revenant (visually aside, which more than earned it the Best Director and Cinematography wins).
Spotlight was emotionally-charged and gripping and was the all round better film in my total opinion. Whilst Room was my absolute favourite out of the Best Picture nominees, I cannot grumble at all about Spotlight being celebrated for its dedication and commitment to subtlety and subject matter.

I disagree. Glad Spotlight won. It took far too long for this gripping story to be told.
shareI was really, really with you until you mentioned The Revenant. The Revenant is the Boyhood of this year- masterfully made but a shallow and uninteresting film. Spotlight was better than The Revenant. Room or Mad Max deserved it this year. Am I upset Spotlight won? Nope. But I am a bit shocked. Nobody predicted that.
shareWell i'm very glad Spotlight won......and right with you on Boyhood. Wow, talk about overly hyped. Impressive in the way in which it was made, but man, long and uninteresting. You are exactly right.

My argument against Spotlight is pretty much identical to The Big Short and Room (although I enjoyed the first two, I've yet to see Room). They're just not cinematic experiences. They're the kind of movie you rent out on a wet Wednesday night if you want an interesting couple of hours. Mad Max and Revenant however, are cinematic tour de forces of film-making, although I found Revenant a chore at times, it was beautiful and sometimes astounding, but waaaaay too much filler.
Dude, that is one gay looking signature.
Boyhood is one of the greatest movie of the 21st century, you fool!
shareIt most certainly did. The Revenant wasn't even the second or third best film of the year. The Big Short was second. Bridge of Lies was third.
shareI honestly didn't care much for The Revenant. I'm not saying that you're wrong, but it felt like just another Western, but made by a pretentious director who thought it was so much more.
shareLMAO I knew before I opened the thread that OP was going to mention something about The Revenant. Get out.
