Did not deserve best picture
Is a well written and acted film with a great social statement, but simply cannot match the stylistic mastery and beautiful/brutal story of The Revenant.

I was shocked to see Spotlight win. I've seen most nominees, and I liked Spotlight by far the least. It's well acted, but I didn't find it all that entertaining or gripping.
Spotlight 7/10 (just barely)
The Big Short 8/10
The Revenant 9/10
Room 9/10
Mad Max 10/10
The Martian 8/10
It was well deserved. The Revenant was typical revenge story that was dragged to death. It was visually stunning that's it. No wonder it wasn't even nominated in writing category. People calling it got snubbed 'cos it was artsy that appeals to few are hilarious. Revenant was far bigger picture than Spotlight. Lol at corny scenes like Glass' wive's spirit communicating with him ever so often to make it look "different". Leo fanboys can keep moaning just like rednecks who are pissed due to religion.
shareI loved The Revenant, but every scene it is was set up specifically to shock and awe its way to the Oscars. The movie was beautifully filmed, but who rides a horse over a cliff and lives to gut it and live inside of it? Everything we see is one unbelievable scene after another. While much of this was based on a true story, a lot of it is embellished to the point of a western sci-fi.
And add to all of this that many of us were checking our watches during the movie wondering how much longer before it ended. It was way too long.
That is why I believe this film did not get the awards that many feel it should have.
I agree. The Revenant was a beautiful film, that's why it won the Oscar for best cinematography. But is not the best picture. The story is just too much and too long. It's almost a nature documentary.
shareSorry, no one can say "too long and boring" when comparing to Spotlight.
Spotlight was like watching an ant-farm of actors.
A fantastic cast... but all for naught.
People will look back on this selection as one of the worst in history. No question.
You are right, The revenant deserved it better. Also, Mark Ruffalo deserved academy award for his performance.
shareSo am I the only one who wanted Room to win?
shareSpotlight is a really great movie and I'm glad it won Best Picture. I rewatched it recently. I can't understand the naysayers who say it isn't cinematic; it's such a well-constructed and engrossing movie, not in spite but because of its lack of stylization. Plus the acting is absolutely flawless and as you say, the message very impactful. The fact that the movie's inspiring more abuse victims to come forward is a very welcome bonus.
The Revenant was all flash, little substance. Very thin story stretched out to interminable length, with a lame copout ending. Still, it was very beautifully shot and the action scenes were great. I enjoyed it, but a very flawed movie.
That said, Inside Out was probably my favorite film of 2015. But it will be a cold day in hell when a cartoon wins Best Picture.
I'm afraid that you underestimate the number of subjects in which I take an interest!
I agree with the OP. ANd I`ve always said: just because a movie touches on an important and serious matter, it doesnt mean it`s great.
