Did not deserve best picture
Is a well written and acted film with a great social statement, but simply cannot match the stylistic mastery and beautiful/brutal story of The Revenant.

shareIt is not a social statement it is factual. This really happened. Not theory.
Not all of this story is politically correct. Most of the abuse was done by grown men on boys. In fact one of the ways to defend the church was to simply blame it on homosexuality and claim that not allowing gay men into the clergy would all but solve the problem.
It was the first film since 1940's Rebecca to win Best Picture and just one other award, suggesting that it narrowly squeaked its win. Also, the unusual distinction of winning the very first and very last award handed out on the night, and nothing in between.
It wasn't really Oscar-worthy but not a bad winner, and as it most likely blocked The Revenant from winning, I'm okay with it - I preferred Spotlight of the two, although I thought that Room, Brooklyn and even The Martian were stronger films among the nominees.
