Did not deserve best picture
Is a well written and acted film with a great social statement, but simply cannot match the stylistic mastery and beautiful/brutal story of The Revenant.

shareMad Max was the best action movie since Terminator 2. People will still be watching it years from now, long after they've forgotten about this depressing movie about priests raping boys that no one cares about or wants to see anyway.
shareYes, but if Mad Max won, the Academy would lose all its credibility.
shareYeah because fantasy movies are so much more relevant aren't they? Movies don't always have to be a two hour journey into escapism.
shareIt did. And it won.
shareWrong.
shareI think Spotlight winning best film is an absolute travesty. Found it dull and devoid of drama and tension. I think in years to come this will be looked at as another of those occasions when The Academy got it totally wrong. The Revenant deserved to win.
shareNah I see it the other way around - Revenant won;t age as well because there isn't a lot of story or writing and in the end it's this lack that will doom it for future generations - it's a one watch wonder. Spotlight will hold up over time because the writing and ensemble cast is excellent.
I watched it yesterday on Blu-Ray on a smaller screen and it didn´t lessen it´s impact. As a matter of fact, there were a couple of things I hadn´t notice when I first saw it and it actually made me like it more.

Never in my lifetime? It's already happened or have you forgotten that Spielberg's Munich, nominated for Best Picture, very much questioned the morality of Israel's response?
"Nothing is more ill bred than trying to steal the affections of someone else's dog."
I am a BIG BIG fan of Tom Hanks and Leo Di Caprio and therefore have watched both- Bridge of Spies and The Revenant.
I also stumbled upon this movie (Spotlight) and I wasn't too excited to watch it due to my lack of interest in religion. Nonetheless I still went ahead with it and it WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!
If you can, even for a moment, keep your fanfeels for leo's movie aside and watch this movie with NO prejudice or bias, you will truly enjoy this masterpiece and will understand why it deservedly won the Oscar!
Kylo Ren killed Han Solo 😭😞
I think the Martian should have gotten the win since it was a touching story of people coming together to rescue one of their one. While the Revenant is a decent film but it is just a revenge story.
shareDepends on what you consider to be the "criteria" for Best Picture - if it is huge spectacle like Dances with Wolves then The Revenant - the only issue is that most people will watch it once and never again - if on the other hand Best Picture is the film you return to over and over again then Spotlight is it hands down, just the writing is far and away better than The Revenant.
But it really begs the question - what is the criteria for Best Picture? As well I never understand how the best director can be different than the best picture - they seen so closely enjoined.
I agree with the OP, saw it the other night and when it ended, I thought to myself, IS that it!

Not to say this movie didn't deserve a "nomination", but I totally agree with you on the "Revenant". Leonardo DiCaprio banged it out of the park. It had what I go to see movies for. But what can you say, every year for the past decade the obvious choices have not won the big ticket. So I guess what I'm saying is, you can't bank on anything, especially movies.
shareCan't match the Stylistic mastery? Agreed. And REVENANT took home the Oscar that awarded it's style: Cinematography.
Spotlight is a much, much better film though. It doesn't over stay its welcome, it's not overly repetitive, and it doesn't feel self-indulgent in any way. It's Oscar drama territory done VERY, VERY well.
I honestly wouldn't have given DiCaprio the award either. I mean fair play to him for his performance but it was 1) mainly endurance, hence why they kept mentioning the "tough shoot" every time they could, and 2) a thinly drawn character with two emotions: angry & sad. Once he'd covered those emotions in the first quarter of the movie, we didn't stray from that formula once. This also explains why there was no screenplay nomination for REVENANT. All style, no substance. Looked beautiful...didn't have much to say. Spotlight all day. So happy it won.
