Did not deserve best picture
Is a well written and acted film with a great social statement, but simply cannot match the stylistic mastery and beautiful/brutal story of The Revenant.

shareOh please, besides Leo's performance and the stunning cinematography, the film was way too overlong. They could have cut some parts out and paced it a lot better. At least Spotlight kept me engrossed for its entire running length.
shareAt least The Revenant had even an inkling of ambition.
Having an opinion can save your life. Just ask Marvin.
Ambition alone doesn't make a movie. There are plenty of films with ambition that get recognized or completely shafted by the Academy. "Under the Skin" was a completely ambitious film from Starr to end and was unrecognized by just about everyone because they mistook it's ambition for pretension. "Spotlight" was ambitious in its reminder of the fight people lead for justice, just as "The Revenant" was ambitious as a visual film.

Yeah I suppose Spotlight was ambitious in its own right, but some of the other nominees were executed much better. I do have to give it to the Academy for selecting a film which criticizes the Catholic church.

Definitely did not deserve it. All the President's Men was so much better. This is more of a TV movie and reminds me of when Crash won.
The Revenant was history in filmmaking. One of the most exquisite movies ever made.
I think Spotlight was the movie voters who'd seen none of the nominees voted for. It was nominated and won by mere virtue of its topic: messy, sometimes confusing writing, run-of-the-mill performances, TV-movie quality...
For sure it was the least interesting and memorable of the nominees, so maybe this is a case of efficient campaigning.
All the President's Men was so much better.
Yeah uh no - you don't know what you're saying, obviously. Spotlight is a decent film, but is 2 classes below All the president's men.
Actually, watching Spotlight felt like watching a TV-remake of All the president's men, with less charismatic characters and a different subject matter.
It's kind of an important film, but it might as well be a TV movie. How fcking bland.

Bland, really? What would have spiced it up for you, flashbacks to some of the child raping?
shareFace it. The Oscars in general really sucked this year. Look at the material spilling out of Chris Rock.
As much as Leo deserved Best Actor, Ridley Scott deserved Best Director and The Martian deserved Best Picture as far as I'm concerned.
Chris Rock was well received. I mean the majority of people thought he was hilarious and killed it with his hosting duties and opening monologue especially. Also, Louie C.K. and Ali G people really loved.
Leo won an Oscar which everyone was waiting in anticipation for.
No one thought The Martian should win the oscar for best picture or best director. If you look at the betting lines in Vegas, didn't have a chance. It was a fantastic movie, but nothing special honestly.
No one cares as far as you're concerned. The majority outweigh you buddy. Just look at reddit and how excited everybody was about the Oscars. It was probably the best and most entertaining Oscars in years, simply because of the boycotts which Chris Rocks made fun of and totally destroyed Will Smith. It was hilarious.
I'm sorry man but most people think you're wrong. So really you're the one who needs to face it.

But those two categories were great which is why they won. And Brie Larson killed it in Room.

Not onlyu that but Lubezkie won his THIRD oscar in a row for Cinematography, that's pretty much unheard of.

Ridley Scott deserved Best Director and The Martian deserved Best Picture
I love both Scott and Damon. I enjoyed "The Martian," and was riveted by Damon's performance, but admit I was surprised to see it nominated. Aside from Damon, everyone else was just on the faceless periphery, with standard issue parts for a vehicles like this. And what was up with Jeff Daniels? It was like he forgot how to act.
IMHO, Aliens had that "standard issue parts" that surround the main character "feel" to it for me, too. Blade Runner, however, well, Blade Runner!!!!
Since 1995, no film has won Best Picture without at least one of the following:
1) screenplay nomination
2) PGA win
3) SAG Best Cast nomination
That remains the best combination of precursors. Plain and simple.
Spotlight won #'s 1 and 3. Also, it ticked all of the main Best Picture nomination indicators: acting, directing, editing, and writing. That equals better cumulative support from key branches, and is crucial on a preferential ballot where The Revenant went 0-2.
Though The Revenant was a very good movie but I think judging by Oscar history Spotlight is not a surprising winner. Such kind of movies usually win at Oscars.
shareTrue that!
I'm the man, behind the man... behind the man.
Yes it did
