I am a Brit that works in the betting industry and have seen/traded almost every sport.
The main reason NFL failed to take off was the sheer cost of starting up a team. It was disappointing the first time round with the Dolphins when NFL tried breaking Europe to get a foothold, there was no intention of sustaining the relationship,it was a quick money grab, clubs were set up without any real financial backing, and the interest wasn't sustained. Typically most people that turn to NFL (in UK) were failed rugby players too,so not the best athletes to advertise the sport.
NBA does acutally have a decent following. It's a large sport in the UK but if we were to truly entertain I feel the UK desperately needs good ex coaches from the NBA rather than players who had a 3 year career for the mavericks and failed to make starts from the roster. Basketball is a BIG part of the P.E curriculum in the UK over winter you'll never really get any players of quality from here though as the game isn't taught at a truly tactically intellectual level. The team with the tallest players usually wins.
Baseball is my personal favourite of the American sports. I enjoyed trading this. I DESPISE cricket its main counterpart in the UK.I like the 2 minute break after a finished innings,it breaks it up. It keeps you entertained for 3 hours. In terms of betting I used to make a fair amount of money using the statistics. Baseball will never take up across UK or europe because quite frankly the sexists here view it as a feminist sport as typically it's a lot like rounders played at girls schools, although show me an 11 year old girl who can smack a ball 420 yards and I'll show you a flying pig!!!!
Ofcourse the main thing that hampers foreign sports int he UK are the timeses they're shown. If I wanna watch the superbowl I have to stay up till 4am,if I wanna watch a full west coast baseball match I'm staying up till 5 am. Basketball although played by more people, generally gets the least viewing times for matches.tpyically only highlights are shown. ESPN UK doesn't help by ownly showing HEAT games.
As some one said, only the dropouts from your teams play soccer in America. Well it's the same here,if you can't play football(soccer) cricket and rugby....you play a foreign sport.
BTW I personally play AFL.. I've found this to be the single most exciting game I;ve ever played and the physically and durability of it is immense
