Why are all US sports so boring?

The USA has given the world many great things in the fields of Technology,Fashion, Music,Film etc etc. However when it comes to Sports the US is a disaster.Basically, very few outside the US have any interest at all in a single sport that the Americans invented.Baseball- I believe only the Cubans and Japanese play or have any interest in it.American Football-popular nowhere outside the USA.Basketball-yes its popular in quite a few countries but mainly countries which are bad at soccer (Eastern Europe,China etc.In major European sporting countries like Germany, France, the UK its dead). Volleyball- a niche sport at best. The famous (in the USA)athletes who play these sports could walk naked down any street around the world and not get a second glance.

Soccer in the US(MLS)is a 2nd rate sport because the best players in the world dont play in the US, Its like Minor League sports, they have a decent following, but theyll never compete with the pro leagues, NFL, NHL, MLB, & NBA, who field the best talent in the world in their respective sports.. there is definitely an interest though, the MLS can pack an NFL stadium(80k-100k)for an all-star game against manchester united.. its like the FIFA Euro basketball leagues, those teams have a following, but those players would rather be playing in the NBA given the opportunity. there are players here who would rather be playing for the premier league or whatever its called..

i still think its funny everytime i hear a butthurt euro cry over the name of football in america, then they respond with the "handegg" joke.. as if every sport needs a literal name, if that were the case baseball would be batball, gloveball, or throwball or some stupid *beep* like that.. hockey would be stickpuck or icegame.. idk why football is called football, but it is, deal with it.. honestly i didnt learn the the rest of the world called soccer, football, until later in highschool, just shows we really dont care..

I don't get where OP was going with his original statements. Different strokes for different folks. Aussies play rugby, the Brits invented cricket, Americans have baseball. Why judge and compare unless you want to make no damn sense.

People can have their favourites - I say the more sport (and choice of sport) in general the better.

Embrace it.

I actually took the time to read all of the posts.
I'm an American, and my two favorite sports are football/soccer(I love the English Premier League) and baseball. Basketball and Hockey, I'll watch frequently, but I don't love them as much.
I use to love american football a lot, but as I grew older(I'm 19) and learned about the concussions that the sport gave players, and the more I appreciated baseballs....grace and soccer's/football's skill.
After that, American football, too me, just felt boring and a guilty pleasure(If you read about former players with concussion issues, then see someone get knocked out, you feel guilty for supporting it). I actually believe, along with George F. Will, Malcolm Gladwell, and Buzz Bissinger, that American football will slowly die out, because of the concussion/ CTE issue.
As other posters have pointed out before baseball and basketball are rapidly(basketball more so) around the world.

As for the british/ european posters who said american soccer/football was bad, we are getting better and we have produced some very good players like CLint Dempsey and Landon Donovan.

I forgot which poster it was, but I would recognize Lionel Messi if someone showed me a picture of him, easily.

Oh, americans and their boring baseball mania-movies. Nobody does sport movies in Europe anymore, it's like watching a sport news 2 hours straight. It's like if you don't go to church sundays and don't like baseball you are out of the community.

Umm.. 1. Football was derived from rugby.
2. Basketball is possibly the 2nd most popular sport in the World. And, btw Spain, Argentina and Italy have great basketball teams.
3. Volleyball is very popular in many places. Not sure what you're talking when you call it niche.
You only have a point in reference to baseball, but I ask you, what other sports are left (besides soccer)? And please dont say handball.

Britain has been responsible for inventing, codifying or organising all the worlds major sports... Baseball was played in Britain in the 18th century (as is mentioned in the opening pages of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen)....

Baseball may only now be played in the US and a few other countries but it originated in Britain

Basketball?

hehe.... you found the only one that is a genuine US invention :)

Soccer is a joke. Why anybody would want to watch a bunch of skinny Eurotrash run around at 40% and MAYBE eke out a single goal for a thrilling, high scoring 1-0 finish is beyond me.

In America we have real athletes, like Calvin Johnson and LeBron James, so we have sports that actually take more than lots of endurance. If Americans took soccer half as seriously as the rest of the world we would dominate every single World Cup. It's just that we realize soccer sucks, so our best athletes play real sports like football and basketball.

As far as baseball goes, yea, I could see how people find it boring. I love it though.

Hell yeah! Watching soccer is like watching paint dry.

Having played all of these sports you mention Football(the one where you use your feet) and Basketball require the most endurance. Fitness levels of Football players are remarkably high, particularly those who play in midfield who run, at almost full speed, for an average of between 10-13 km (8ish miles) a game while also enduring scuffles and tackles and endless bursts of acceleration. You have to be a top athlete to handle it.

Skinny Eurotrash? The whole world apart from the US plays this sport. Remarkably ignorant comment. And 'skinny'? Have you seen some of these players? Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Didier Drogba, Alex Song, Michael Essien, anyone on the Sengalese team? They're huge, powerful athletes. Without strength you get nowhere in Football. Cristiano Ronaldo may be a little thinner, but he's an athlete at his peak.

If America decided to take Football seriously they would probably be rather good, that is true. The US are resourceful when it comes to creating great athletes. But they do dedicate a lot of money to Football and thousands of Americans play it very seriously but they are not as good as a tiny country such as Belgium. It's simply because the game isn't in their blood. They prefer games where points are scored all the time - as if the amount of points in a game is what makes it interesting - and there is the possibility of stopping every few minutes for commercials.

So what? We like them. The difference is that we don't care what you think.

reply

ok ok ok, I'm English and I do not find USA sports dull.

The fact is, we are brought up on our own sports so appreciate them more.

But yank sports are cool, there's always something going on and music and razzmatazz and girls wearing less than bikinis bouncing around.

plus I used to play Madden American football and ice hockey on the Megadrive in the 90's and they were always better than our own football (soccer) games.

reply

Maybe US sports are 'boring' to the rest of the world because they take more skilled and educated athletes to understand the game. See how we did in the Olympics... it wasn't just some fluke. Nobody can compete with the US athletically.

reply

I know the first thing I think of when I see an American Footballer is - 'I bet he is educated'

reply

While I think your comment is a bit arrogant, I do agree that it takes a lot more to fully understand baseball than most other sports. It looks simple on the surface and to most of us fans. However after watching it for years and playing it a bit up through high school, I had a chance to listen to two very experienced commentators/former players call the American League playoff series in a way I had never heard before.

They discussed defense in terms of count on the hitter, runner postion etc. For example they said if the next pitch was taken as a strike, the fielders would move shift positions in a certain way. They explained why in terms of what the following pitch would be. Sure enough, that is what happened.

I had been aware of this but not of the depth and complexity they were explaining.
