I thought it was meh. I like slow burn films that build the sense of danger but the revelation about what was going on was super dull and predictable. It’s more like a ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ than a Get Out, I’m quite surprised by the positive reviews, it’s an okay directional debut with some good performances and nothing more. Alien: Romulus 100%. Finally a great Alien film again, it’s only taken Hollywood nearly 40 years to achieve that. Prometheus didn’t live up to the hype, I was so excited for it especially with Ridley returning. Covenant is even worse and one of the worst films in the franchise so another film with David is a big no from me. Blomkamp’s films after District 9 have all ranged from mediocre to bad so I don’t know if he’s got it in him to make a great Aliens sequel. Also I don’t want to see old woman Ripley same as I don’t want to see old man Indiana Jones, these characters aren’t Rocky, I don’t want to see them in their twilight years. Alien (1979) The first and will always be the best, probably the best horror film ever made. Alien: Romulus (2024) Heavily influenced by both Alien and Aliens whilst also bringing some new horror and fresh ideas to the table that really worked. Aliens (1986) A rollercoaster ride of a film that leans into the action and the horror takes a backseat which I’m fine with, Cameron played to his strengths with this one. The rest are just in no particular order, they’re all rubbish with very few redeeming qualities. Prometheus might have been alright if Alien: Covenant had actually been a good payoff for it but as it’s not Prometheus is now just a mostly boring waste of time. Completely agree with this review. The whole film is just a poorly written smokescreen to hide that it’s a concert music video for Saleka Shyamalan. The film betrays its own internal logic countless times. Worst film of the year for me, Shyamalan should be embarrassed. I’m an M. Night fan as well and a bit of an apologist for his films. I enjoyed The Happening for the intentionally silly B-Movie that it is. There’s no defending Trap though, this movie was clearly only made to kickstart Shyamalan’s daughter’s music career. There is no suspense or tension to be found in this supposed ‘thriller’ and the movie is utterly incapable of going even just a few minutes without something stupid happening. Trap 100% deserves the Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Film Razzies and I’m genuinely disappointed in M. Night for making this nepotism shitfest. Say what you want about his other films but he at least was just trying to entertain with those. Sam Raimi’s first two Spider-Man films are great. Love the Tom Holland trilogy but would like a new trilogy with him that’s a bit more disconnected from the MCU which I think we’ll get eventually. Haha, yeah that’s exactly what I’m saying. You sound butthurt that this movie has become a critical and commercial success, cope harder. ‘If the jokes aren’t remotely funny’ I thought the film was a hilarious buddy comedy from start to finish and the story was decent for an action comedy, no worse than the previous two Deadpool films. Sucks you didn’t find it funny but there’s no need to get so triggered because many people did. Over $80 million opening weekend for Twisters, the best-ever opening weekend for a natural disaster movie. We'll see how well it does this weekend with Deadpool out but it's had a much better opening than you predicted and more than Will Smith's Bad Boys 4 opening weekend. I’m a big Cage fan and I thought he was perfect casting, the character is deranged and Cage delivers with minimal screen time. If you want to see a great but restrained Nic Cage performance then watch Pig. The titular character having no backstory is what made the film so fantastic to me. You start explaining everything it takes away the mystery. It kind of reminded me of Joker in The Dark Knight, we don’t really know how he became the Joker and that makes him more terrifying. ^ This It’s not even just for A24 horror films it’s all horror films. Since the pandemic no horror film has surpassed $300 million worldwide at the box office. The last horror film to make over $400 million was It Chapter 2 in 2019. Less and less people are going to the cinema and just preferring to wait at home it seems. I’ve now seen both and Longlegs is one of the best horror movies of the last ten years and really lived up to the hype and the fantastic marketing campaign. MaXXXine is probably my biggest disappointment of the year so far along with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. MaXXXine’s story is rather bland and forgettable, I’m surprised Ti West went ahead with this script, it felt like a first draft that needed massive rewrites. Longlegs 10/10 MaXXXine 4/10 Longlegs lived up to the hype for me, it delivered on that sense of dread from the trailers. Dune: Part Two, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Furiosa, Civil War and A Quiet Place: Day One all lived to the hype though for me. I do agree though that some films have been overhyped like Late Night with the Devil, how that got critical acclaim I have no idea. Yes it's original but it's executed so poorly that it's an absolute waste of that original premise. Cloverfield had a great viral marketing campaign. All the Deadpool films have had some pretty funny marketing stuff. Disagree, this was the most unsettling horror film we’ve had in years, probably since Hereditary. The sense of dread it managed to create was incredibly well done. Also it’s not arthouse horror, that would be something like that other Nic Cage horror film he was in called Mandy. Longlegs is a conventional horror thriller and a very good one at that, it’s not trying to be art house at all. It started out great with the mystery building and then the third act reveal was very underwhelming, I was just like ‘Oh, is that it?’ Agreed. The Caesar trilogy was a great film trilogy, perhaps one of the best ever made. Hollywood of course can’t leave well enough alone and they’ll keep making these Apes films until they no longer make a profit. All this film managed to show me though is how creatively bankrupt it is, it brought very little new to the franchise. Also it’s just really boring. Agreed, the script was really bad. Gosling tries his best with it but the jokes fell flat for me a lot of the time, it was nowhere near as funny as Leitch’s last film Bullet Train or Gosling’s other comedy films The Nice Guy’s and Barbie. Hobbs & Shaw wasn’t funny either, this writer’s style of comedy is so bland and forgettable. It’s one of the best films of the year so far. George Miller is still the king of directing vehicular action sequences and the world-building here is fantastic. I only hope we can at least now get one final Mad Max film with Tom Hardy in the next couple of years and perhaps Charlize as Furiosa. But if not then the Mad Max saga has ended on a high note with both Fury Road and Furiosa.
