I would argue Sarah was the main in 2 and the Terminator was more major in 3, but all that aside, I still felt more for Newt than I did for John and the family dynamic is still present in both Aliens and T2.
John Conner was only the main character in Salvation and even then not very interesting.
Why? In essence it's the loss of the surrogate family in both cases.
