How Terminator: Dark Fate Stole Alien 3’s Opening Scene

James Cameron complained about Alien 3's opening, but 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate attempted almost the same opening scene—and did it worse.

I love Hicks and Newt, but killing them off isn't comparable to John Connor.

reply

Why? In essence it's the loss of the surrogate family in both cases.

reply

Well Connor is the main character, for starters. Sarah knows him a lot longer than Ripley did too.

reply

John Conner was only the main character in Salvation and even then not very interesting.

reply

He's the main character in 2, 3, AND 4.

reply

I would argue Sarah was the main in 2 and the Terminator was more major in 3, but all that aside, I still felt more for Newt than I did for John and the family dynamic is still present in both Aliens and T2.

reply

I don't care how much you liked Newt, it's irrelevant. John IS the main character in parts 2, 3, and 4.

reply

Don't see the difference between killing John and Newt still.

reply

That's because you "like" Newt more and are biased. You are not objective and basing your opinion on preferences and emotion. A supporting and main character are not equivalent.

reply

Within Dark Fate's timeline, John was a major character in 2 and was then killed in Dark Fate's opening. Newt was a major character in Aliens and then killed in 3's opening. In those terms, they're even.

reply

Your entire opinion is based on "I like Newt." I like Newt too, but it doesn't make her a main character. She's a supporting character, brah.

reply

No, it's based on neither one's death being that consequential.

reply

Newt is NOT an important character. Even though you might feel she is.

reply

Neither was John when he was killed. Time produced a different judgment day and a different savior.
