Seriously you guys suck. Horror movies suck these days cause there is too much Cgi, too much gore, too much violence, too much crap...this movie is total old school horror and it's great! The doll never moves and I love it!! I was 16 when the first Scream came out and I remember how original it was...now every movie copies it!! Same plot, same dumbass kids, same stupid dialog...zero imagination...Teens and 20 something's have no creativity anymore and this is going to ruin the future of horror movie making.
I'm pushing 30; super horror fiend... Although I'm not scared by many movies. That being said, this did nothing for me. The demon was goofy, and I didn't really get why Annabelle the ghost was so crazy about the doll as a ghost... She's already dead, why care about it? And then, if that's all she wanted, why torment the family? I've still got a few minutes left, but I'm very bored.
I agree. This movie was AWESOME!! really spooked me. I hated that dam doll, I can't believe anyone would find her "cute" or attractive enough for a gift! The original doll was a simple Raggedy Ann doll. I'll watch this again. So great to have a REAL horror movie and not blood, guts, and gore!
I'm 39 and the fact that you consider 'Scream' a high mark in horror history is pretty telling.
I have loved horror movies all my life, I like all kinds from the silly slashers like F13th to "slow" character builds such as "Session 9" to Hammer Horror Classics with Christoper Lee and Peter Cushing.
This movie was just full of a whole lot of nothing, it was all over the place. Why was the doll even in this? It did nothing, killed no one. So it was the conduit? So, ok, maybe we are thinking since the doll is called "Annabelle" and the woman who killed herself was called "Annabelle" that maybe it was her soul in the doll? No, it was some demon, who wanted the wife's soul for.....what reason again?
Then there's these neighbor kids who for some reason draw some creepy pictures (or was it the demon ooooh, creepy) that lead to nothing and we never see them again.
He got a soul, not the wife's, but he got a soul, and then what, he just went back down to hell with his new soul to do what with it exactly? Usually there's some horrible consequence like the demon will be free to roam the earth or something. I could go on and on.
I can enjoy "shut your brain off and just have fun with it" horror films, I can enjoy suspenseful thrillers, but this was neither, it had little attempts at both but just came out a boring mess.
Yeah movies like this are seriously annoying. They do nothing right, and just go through the motions until it hits the 90 minute mark. They're shot cheap and meant for a huge opening weekend, then when word of mouth gets out how bad it is there's a sudden dropoff, they literally plan for this with movies of this ilk. But they made it so cheaply that it still makes money no matter what.
The doll had nothing to do with anything, I agree. It could have just been an invisible demon and it would have been the same movie. The sets weren't convincing, the pace was slow as mud, the characters are boring don't seem real, the scares are choreographed from a mile away, and the whole thing is a blend of better movies' scenes spliced together. Clearly nobody involved in this dreck was even trying.
Crap in equals crap out. This is a fine example of that...

Oh for sure, it was put together quick, done on the cheap, and like you say, it worked, they got a quick surge off claiming to be part of the "The Conjuring" then it died off. I thankfully only rented it, and only because my niece was a big Conjuring fan, but she hated it too.
Scream wasn't even horror, it was meta, like Cabin in the Woods.
I am going to be 28 soon. I love horrors. I agree with you on modern horrors being often *beep* and how true horror doesn't come from CGI and gore (gore can be ok when used properly.)
But this wasn't a good movie. The story was poor. A slow movie requires some interesting story, original story, or at least good psychological aspect - we got boring uninteresting characters, a grotesque doll possessed by a dead woman possessed by a demon, some barely coherent cliches about wanting a soul or whatever, cop out ending with a martyr stranger incredibly caring about a random baby... what was good about this? What emotion does it leave you with, where does horror come from?
