I agree. I will no longer trust IMDB ratings. Snoozers like Winter's Bone, Under the Skin and John Wick have high ratings, while decent movies are underrated. I just watched a 5.2 bank robbery movie last night with Adrien Brody and Hayden Christensen, "American Heist", and it was actually quite decent (a 7 at least), and in fact, Brody's performance was even better than his Oscar role in the Pianist! Yet it seems everyone hated American Heist as "direct-to-DVD" crap. I don't get it. John Wick is formulaic, over-stylized crap:
1. Hero who is dark and mysterious, like anti-hero. Check.
2. Hero is such a bad-ass, his reputation precedes him. Check.
3. Bad ass hero has a soft spot (his dog). Check.
4. Russian mob. Check.
5. Filmed mostly at night. Check.
6. Secret club which has its own, outre rules. Check.
7. Mobster son with daddy issues. Check.
8. One-man army theme. Check.
9. Bad guys take turns getting taken out. Check.
I mean, seriously, the man goes in and kills practically an entire nightclub of Russian mobsters, and cannot take out the son who's sitting in the hot tub? Even while he's within shooting distance? HE escapes? Right.
And they couldn't even get a real Russian to play the mob boss. Instead we have to endure a Swedish accent? It was like, "We need a Russian mob boss. How about this guy? He sounds like Stellan Skaarsgard. OK!"
This blew chunks. And yet people loved it. No more, IMDB!
