The flag at the end...

why was it shown with such dramatic effect? American propaganda?

reply

To the American's that can't see it.

The movie portrayed the wimps and cowards as British. The English guy and his little brother (both non-English actors) as overly-posh wimpy stereotypes with terrible OTT accents, even the cowardly evil boyfriend of Blake is British, the actor is welsh. The English guys were portrayed as more or less incapable of looking after themselves, and needed an American girl to make the correct decisions for them. Then there's the flag at the end to reiterate it more to non-americans.

The flag thing has been overdone. The movies aren't just being sold to nationalistic Americans, but to the rest of the world too, expecting foreign viewers to part with their hard-earned money, are we supposed to think "yeah USA rocks and we suck compared"? Many American movies have been OTT with its patriotism. Chris Reeves Superman seemed more interested in flying the American flag and being the wholesome American rather than being the saviour of the human race. Rocky IV was just blatant through and through with it with the Russians turning against their own man and cheering on the USA. Damn, that must have really gone down well in Russia. I bet that film is still despised there today, lol.

At the end of the day, patriotism is fine, over-patriotism on the other hand is a huge cringing facepalm. There is a time and a place for it.

So let's look at the flip-side (my fiancee is American btw).

Could you imagine James Bond (English) killing an evil American stereotype stetson wearing cigar chomping villain with a terrible accent by impaling him on a flag pole with the union jack flag flying proudly at the end? I'm reckoning most of you Americans here wondering what all the fuss is about would be in absolute *beep* outrage giving it a huge thumbs down calling us arrogant, even though your movie industry does the exact same thing a hundred times more and still wonder why us non-Americans scratch our heads about San Andreas, etc.

At the end of the day, it is all pointless propaganda which serves nothing to the story, it's like telling the rest of the world "We're the best and everyone else sucks" compared. As I said, if we done the same thing with Bond and countless other movies as much as you guys do, you'd then be seeing it the same way, boot on other foot.

I'd say it was subtly trying to imply Merica is strong and will always soldier on etc...

Definitely felt heavy handed to me.

I just saw the movie and there was a collective laugh in the cinema at the flag scene. Other than that silly moment the movie was okay.

P.S. not in US

It's so funny to me the irony that people from nations are ALWAYS complaining about Americans, always making fun of us, and dissing us, say how we are rude and messed up...yet you never hear Americans saying this stuff about other nations. Also, you don't like the USA? Almost every aspect of your modern life, from your PC to your phone, to your car to your food, to your fashion, to your taste in music to EVERYTHING likely has roots in the USA. I honestly can not believe that people complain about this. It's only the fact that it's an American flag that everyone complains. Look, to those of you that live in countries that don't have any national pride, or that you're just spoiled and have no concept of national pride...WE in America are dealing with really rough times at the moment, our economy is still bad, we are very divided politically at the moment, as well as racially...there is so much tension and anger in the USA right now, and if the film maker wants to make a point of "we need unity, we need to show that we are strong, that we are all Americans, and that we will survive" THEN GET OVER IT! If it bothers you that much, then just don't go see the movie again. If you have such an issue with an AMERICAN movie showing AMERICAN pride...then maybe you should just stop watching American movies, how about that? I am so sick of this...it's become so common for people to complain about this that half the people complaining about it don't even know what they are talking about. Quite frankly...if you're NOT an American...then you just won't get it, you won't get the national pride that we have, regardless of what you think of us, we are still a prideful nation. I still remember 9/11 as if it were yesterday, and I remember the nation coming together swelling with pride of our history, and this scene took a page from that, so this IS how it would be honestly. If you don't like it, don't watch, simple.

That's just not true. Do some research and you'll find that although America is good at popularizing and selling, the roots of all of the above are definitely not American.

Your comments only serve to show how insular you are. If you take the time and allow yourself to believe that not everything comes from American influence, you will be able to appreciate that America is good at some things, not so good at others and that other countries are not weak just because they don't shout as loud.

It's not easy to be open-minded and to allow facts to change your beliefs but it is ultimately rewarding if you can work things out for yourself rather than being told what you "should" think.

I don't know what rock you crawled out from. I see Americans making fun of other countries' cultures and people all the time. There's been a ridiculous Indian stereotype on a popular animated TV show for over 25 years.

The flag in this movie was cheesy and unneeded (and frankly made no sense that that giant flag would just be perfectly placed in a crumbled building like that)

Just because you are too stupid to understand it, it does not mean that it is a plot hole

Because that's how we do it in the U.S.A.

I would imagine that the unfurling stars and stripes at the end would play well to an American audience. However, it just made me cringe.

You can't palm off a second-rater on me. You gotta remember I was in the pink!
