Too Slowwww

Aside from everything else, the pace of this movie enabled me to fold laundry, brush the dog, take a shower, then ask my husband "What happened? What did I miss?" and the answer was nothing.
I'm perplexed by the high rating and the scenery only feels muggy and mosquitoey not to mention snakey.

The action does pick up in the last quarter but the story is only mildly interesting. ( it was the middle I was bored)
Some of the characters remind me too much of real life unfortunately!
Thank goodness I had a coupon code for Redbox.

"Don't be ridiculous. It's in my secret room behind the bookcase.

This is the type of film, or you love him or not. Exactly what captures the drama is slow, it's better than shooting and chase.

reply

I don't know why but this movie kept me on the edge whole way through. Loved it. Sorry you didn't have same experience OP.

reply

I agree with the OP. It was slow and I think some of the people here had great explanations as to why: too many character relationships and the overall plot was very simple. For the record, I don't mind deliberately paced films. I loved "Winter's Bone", "Take Shelter", and "The Station Agent". Although I did like the performances, the setting, and the themes that were explored, the overall story and the film, in general, just didn't do it for me.

reply

This movie isn't about plot. So, the simple plot and multiple relationsips is non-issue.

This is a kid confused about the relationship between man and woman, and is getting mixed messages from different people who went through different relationships, and different emotions. So every relationship in the film counts. Because every confusion of its complexity that adds to him contemplating it against the others, count.

What movie did you watch? There's somthing going on every minute.

reply

I rented this because I saw some reviewer compare it to the classic Stand by Me which is one of my favorites of all-time

what a mistake- this film didn't even come close- a total waste of 2 hours of my life I'll never have again

it might have worked better if it actually showed the details of how the dad made his living on the river, lived on a houseboat, or how Mud was really eking out an existence on the island

not once did I ever see a fish caught by the dad or Mud, even though that was what was fueling their lives!

and the "philosophy" of Mud (was it supposed to be profound?) simply sounded like an idiot talking- none of it made any sense

reply

U really wanted to see them catch fish, to prove that they were sustaining themselves??!

How about heart monitors, to prove that their hearts are still pushing blood thru their systems? Beep......beep.......beep......

I cant say that Mud ever philosophized much, and of what he did, he admitted later that he was a bad person, but would try to change.

Comparing it to Stand By Me is kinda.....eh, bad idea. But ur reasons as for why Mud was a total waste are ridiculous. I'm surprised u liked Stand By Me, seeing as how they didn't show the boy by the tracks ACTUALLY DYING.

This movie was amazing from start to finish. There's just film fans like you who have no attention span.

MovieKid100's mom is a prostitute. One Direction sucks. You're Next failed. What else is new?

reply

I agree this movie was exceptional, deep minds appreciate character development, shallow ones can't understand it.

You're going to love Ingmar Bergman, then.

reply

Ingmar Bergman?
I love that comment...she was great in Casablanca and Spellbound.

reply

Agreed and a horrible movie to boot. A waste of time. Wanted it to pick up and deliver a decent ending. Nothinnnnnnng everrrrrrrr happpppppppened. A real snoozefest.

reply

It's not my attention span that is lacking- I have a great attention span. I can easily watch entire silent films from the teens and '20s.

what is lacking here is any interesting characters or plot....or movie

reply

It's more about taste than attention span. I'm sure the people saying this movie was "slow" or lacking in plot, characters or anything interesting can watch a full 10 hour Jersey Shore marathon with no issue. This was one of the best movies I've seen all year.

reply

I guess they needed to add a number of absurdly impossible James Bond chase scenes and shootouts so people like you don't lose interest.

reply

Totally disgree..superb film, slow, yes, but engrossing from the off with excellent performances and towards the end, pretty intense and very moving.
Why does every movie made these days have to be paced like a manic pop video on acid, with a thousand cuts per minute?
The attention span of viewers is so low these days it's no wonder a great film like this draws the same dumb complaints of "it's too slow!"
