Chappie Vs Ex machina

I fail to understand why this has a 7.2 rating...If Ex-machina can get an 8 this was certainly a 9!

Ex Machina is a trundling mess of masturbatory dialogue but because it takes place in shiny, modern buildings and has longer time between cuts, it's assumed by critics to be more thought provoking. It was well shot, and I have no quibbles with the acting, but it certainly wasn't an intelligent treatment of the subject. The characters were all morons and the portion of the movie that explored the concept of an AI and its implications were staggeringly lacking. Plu it had so many plot holes it hurts. Why kill the only guy who can make AIs? And why screw over the guy who is going to be your advocate? Easily the dumbest AI to appear in a movie in quite some time.

If you want something that actually presents the idea of an AI intelligently, Chappie or Her or Transcendence all do an infinitely better job of that. Chappie gets all the hate though because it's a story of an AI that has some limitations (aka a physical body) and the story is wrapped in the grungy underworld of Joburg and bullets fly. But it covers the evolution of an AI extraordinarily well and characters like Deon, Yolandi (and of course Chappie) had far more depth than anyone in Ex Machina.

Life's too short to be so angry over nothing. Have you ever tried watching and then discussing movies because you actually enjoy those activities?

reply

2 totally different movies. I enjoyed both of them.

reply

Ex Machina, more like Ex...position.

Never wanted to STFU a film so hard.

I completely disagree, but then I would rather watch a flawed movie with some originality than a slick but bland piece. Actually I don't mind an unimaginative piece if it's done with full knowledge that it's more about entertainment than taking itself seriously. What is incredibly distasteful is a movie taking itself so seriously as though it has some revelations to offer and then falls flat on its face. Exhibit A: Ex Machina.

Chappie's upbringing by criminals in Joburg was far more interesting to me. But while Chappie has some very one-dimensional characters, essentially acting like forces of nature to drive the plot and the actions of the protagonists, at least it had protagonists that made believable decisions and personalities.

Ex-Machina was made up of a cold AI that could manipulate which lacked personality of any sort, an absolutely unbelievable moron who gets manipulated by an AI and an equally clueless super-genius who is just a dick for the sake of being a hated character. People are just being fooled by its exceptional pretentiousness.

I'm pretty sure Versace is just retarded. All his replies are insults most likely fueled by a need to constantly stroke his own ego.

reply

I'm almost certain that Versace is just a wannabe hipster douchebag who takes himself too seriously like all the pseudo-intellectuals. Take a look at some of his ratings. He operates only in binary, rating everything either a 1 or a 10 with no in between. It's obvious that he likely hasn't even watched many of the movies he gave 10s to but only rated them that high because they are "classics" that everyone is supposed to love. He rates some of the absolute worst horror films as 10s.

I totally agree that he is just plain retarded. That fact was pretty clear from his uninspired insults and total lack of thought in his replies. Or maybe by the fact that he disappears from every discussion when asked to give any more info as to why he hates the movie. I wouldn't be surprised if this *beep* never even saw Chappie at all.

I gave this a 9 while Ex machina got 7 from me.

For its one time entertainment value, I would have given it a 10. But 10 is reserved for masterpieces.

Ex machina is one of those pretentious movies that try to be something deep rather than be.

Ex Machina has more in common with The Machine (good up until it turned into a dumb action movie) than Chappie.

Chappie is more like, a shorthand version of Appleseed or Ghost in the Shell. Contains all their elements, but never explores them as well.

reply

i don't think these are similar movies. apart from the AI theme, they have nothing in common! i think chappie is meant to be an entertaining movie, while ex machina has more depth. this said, i loved chappie, but i think it's fair that it is rated lower than ex machina.

While I feel that Chappie received plenty of unfair bad reviews, I feel that Ex Machina was a bit better.
BTW, I finally watched Chappie, expecting not to like it, based on the hate, and ended up enjoying it immensely. Just saying I'm not a Chappie hater.
