Any Earth species that kill and don't feed?

Aside from humans, is there any species of creature on this planet that hunts for fun, or hunts just for the sake of killing something near them? As far as I can recall from every nature show I have ever watched, pretty much every single creature that kills another does it for food.

That being said, since the moon creatures obviously have another source of food (they would HAVE to, as humans are not a viable food source on the moon, and the creatures are never shown eating any of the astronauts)why attack the astronauts? I mean, the moon is big enough where they could have kept a wide berth and not come into contact with the astronauts at all, and waited the 3 days (I think it was 3?) until they left. Just seems odd that if the creatures didn't need to use the astronauts for food, that they would just start terrorizing them and killing them.

"All the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll whisper "no."

cats kill stuff all the time with no intention of eating it.

What? People are killed all the time by animals that don't eat them. More people are killed by the hippopotamus than lions. Hippos are vegetarians. Animals kill for several different reasons. They kill because they are frightened. They kill to protect their young and their territory. Sometimes they even kill accidentally just by running by or running away from a danger.
In the case of this movie, it seems the devices the astronauts deployed woke or frightened or angered the rock creatures. It would seem creatures like this prefer an environment where nothing is moving around and creating vibrations. Anything disturbing their environment could be percieved as a threat.
Peace.

Also, the astronauts picking up rock samples were likely inadvertently picking up some of the "rock creatures" and carrying them away.
So, the rock creatures were reacting to their "relatives" being kidnapped by essentially alien creatures (humans) and taken away forever.

There are countless animals that kill for fun. Humans are in no way unique in this regard.

I take if you've never had a cat.

Some house cats hunt and kill birds and small mammals as "presents" for their owners.

"This isn't TV, it's real life. Can't you tell the difference?"
"Sure - I just like TV better."

reply

Domestic cats. Some eat what they kill; some don't.

reply

Wow, seems no-one actually watched the film properly if they don't understand why the creatures were so active around the landing site, and why they were agitated.

They may just be attracted to thermal radiation, and the bodies of the astronauts would have been giving that off constantly.

House cats will kill mice without eating them. They kill birds, rabbits and other little critters without eating them.

The only animals, to my knowledge, that have been proven to kill for fun are chimpanzees. They actually form "gangs" and attack and kill other chimpanzees, and they do this for sport or fun.

Mink, cats, dogs, male elephants raised without a male figue
