Any Earth species that kill and don't feed?

Aside from humans, is there any species of creature on this planet that hunts for fun, or hunts just for the sake of killing something near them? As far as I can recall from every nature show I have ever watched, pretty much every single creature that kills another does it for food.

That being said, since the moon creatures obviously have another source of food (they would HAVE to, as humans are not a viable food source on the moon, and the creatures are never shown eating any of the astronauts)why attack the astronauts? I mean, the moon is big enough where they could have kept a wide berth and not come into contact with the astronauts at all, and waited the 3 days (I think it was 3?) until they left. Just seems odd that if the creatures didn't need to use the astronauts for food, that they would just start terrorizing them and killing them.

"All the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll whisper "no."

I'm fairly certain that Wolverines kill for sheer pleasure, though they do sometimes eat their kills it isn't uncommon for them to just kill anything in their path/way.

Mongooses, they kill snakes for fun, but as has been said, this looks like self defense.

Yes. Carrots. You may think they're harmless little roots, but that's what they want you to think.

Oh, they'll sacrifice a few to the odd bunny here and there, but it's all a ploy. You've been warned. Fear the carrots.

Cats hunt for fun. Recently there also been discovery that dolphins actually kill whale babies for fun and just leave them to bleed to death. There are such cases in nature, we still know very little about our animal kingdom habbits.
The moon creatures could have been territorial and were defending thier territory from unknown invader. if alien would land on our planet and start just going on about his business, its possible we would attack to "defend our planet". whether we would try to communicate first is a matter for discussion, but if that were to fail it would be guns blazing.

No, recently there has been a discovery that dolphins kill porpoises and their own young and I am not sure why you state they are doing so for fun.

Frequently animals will battle others of the same or different species over territory, which sometimes results in death.
Some of these animals are:

Big cats
Bears
Killer whales (have been known to kill sharks that attack and kill orca young)
hyenas
wolves (will kill pumas in their territory and hunt down the cubs and kill them as well)
domestic dogs
domestic cats
chimpanzees (will kill other chimps for "revenge")
Elephants (will attack and kill rhinos without provocation)

now that you mention this, it reminds me of Pitch Black which was worse for this matter. creatures came out to feed once in a long time. it's already hard to think these creatures feed only then and maybe sleep the rest of the time, but what if there's nothing to feed on when they come out???

There are plenty of creatures that are just down right hostile. That will kill what ever is moving. IE Ants will kill other ants that approach their nest if their phermones are differn't. And they arn't killed for food they are just killed for being in the wrong place.

The creatures may not have needed the astronouts for food but they probably needed food, and when food presents itself it will get eaten.

Besides the spiders where dipicted as being more sinister with intentions of invading earth via the knowledge they gained by attacking the astronauts and cosmonaaught. You could tell they were getting inside of nates head some how.

Am I the only one who actually remembered how when they figured out that they were sent there to be 'guinea pigs' that one of them said something about one of their pieces of gear ---> "It keeps transmitting this signal" and the signal sounded an awful lot like some scary monster call.

So why did the critters attack the astronauts? Cause they were being agitated by whatever device was sending that signal the astronauts discovered. Remember when they went out to the three sites where they'd set up equipment to shut them down?

Basically they were duped by their own people into setting up some kind of trap to draw the monsters in which in one way or another caused them to attack them. There are plenty of examples of creatures in nature that react violently to other animals and humans if they run astray of each other. Venomous snakes in the deserts obviously have no hope of eating us but you still have to be extremely careful of them because they will bite you.

Also, we can assume that they're some kind of semi intelligent alien monsters just because they attacked the machinery. Most animals wouldn't pay much attention to that stuff from what I figure. You leave a tent up and a Grizzley comes walking in he probably won't even touch it unless he smells food inside it.

TL :DR
1. DoD had them set up signal devices that drew in and possibly agitated the monsters.
2. Likely semi intelligent nature demonstrated by deliberately targeting and destroying of equipment.
3. Monsters have to be menacing beyond being hungry in any horror flick.
