A Bit Overrated To Be Honest (Backed by Reasons)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining just to complain here but these are some legit dislikes I have with this movie.

While I love the concept of Deadpool this movie just kind of wasn't for me. I'm not saying I hate Deadpool as I thoroughly loved his 2014 game but I don't exactly think this movie deserves all of its praise.

I don't outright hate the movie, there are things I loved such as the performances of everyone. Ryan Reynolds knocks it out of the park as Deadpool and T.J. Miller as Weasel is great to watch. There's also a lot of unique sequences and I love how the movie takes shots at modern superhero films.

However I have 2 major problems with this movie. The first being its status as a comedy. The movie just didn't really make me laugh, maybe three times. I think this is because many of the references and jokes in this movie are either really, really, really obscure or outdated by this point.

My second big problem is that nothing really happens in this film. I saw a bunch of posts on Facebook around the time this movie came out that said 'The reason there's no spoilers is because little kids aren't allowed to see the movie.' And I think the reason there weren't any spoilers about the movie is because nothing really groundbreaking or interesting happens! There's barely any action in this film, just 2 rather small sequences: highway and junkyard battle at the end. Both sequences which were replayed over and over again in the trailers.

Sure you can argue that the movie being so small makes it more unique and special, fine. But you've got to admit that nothing happens at all. The movie progresses rather slowly when the entire plot could've been resolved in 25 minutes. Seriously, this movie is 75% flashback and 25% modern day.

Anyways those are my thoughts on Deadpool. Any responses? Let's have an organized discussion.

I just finished the movie recently, and I found the film very funny and by far the best superhero movie to come out of FOX.

The humor is such a huge part of what makes this movie work, so if the humor fails you in some way I can see why it can feel overrated. I guess its age but the comedy really worked for me.

It did have a lot of flashbacks to fill in the origin but they did it in such a way that it stayed entertaining, at least to me. Origin stories have become so boring in superhero films, but the presentation here with his running commentary worked in ways that others fall flat.

I really enjoyed the film, I am curious if they can maintain its quality in a sequel.

maybe you dont have any humor or maybe youre too thick to understand the jokes.

Or maybe he just didn't find it funny b/c he doesn't have the exact same sense of humor that you have b/c he's lived a completely different life than you and had different life experiences. "No, he just doopid b/c he didn't like it right!" 🐼

my assesment, 1. you have no humor and 2. you suck just like the fox execs who keep fkin up other marvel properties.

My assessment of you. 1. You are an only child. 2. You live in a basement. 3. You are single and can't for the life of you figure out why.

you have a really narrow minded view on how comic book movies should be... "this movie has nothing going on and there are only two action scenes"

so what your definition of a good comic book movie is just a bunch of crappy action man you'd love BvS

that's what makes DeadPool so riveting... the style and the way the story is being told
talk about action

i love the deadpool montage !

While I thought the movie was great, I agree that not a whole lot happens in it. The time jumps gave the film more edge and made the story seem more interesting to follow, but had it been told in a linear fashion, some of the minor points the plot doesn't follow up on would have been more apparent. For example, I was slightly bothered that the flashbacks didn't show how Deadpool first came into contact with the X-Men when they were trying to recruit him, since that was a point that emerged over and over again. I was also hoping for more closure regarding the friend Wade made in the mutants lab. One line from Deadpool could have added some significance to his death. It was an enjoyable movie overall but I don't blame you for bringing this aspect up.

OP - I'd hardly call the highway and junkyard battles 'small'. And did you sleep through the action montage where DP is chasing down Ajax's goons?

Also, DP and Ajax's fight in the burning Weapon-X lab.

We all get a little lost sometimes.

For this, you need to actually read the comics, unfortunately. They go into more detail there. I figure they will address the X-Men connection more in the sequel in flashback. Especially since they're bringing Cable into the story.

Thats a great point you made. On the death of his lab friend. Honestly, the film couldve been longer to fill the gaps. Rhe lab scenes couldve beenbbtanched out more

Depends on what you were hoping for. I think it succeeded spectacularly on what it set out to do - make a snarky, unpretentious action movie on a relatively limited budget that works on a meta level. If you were hoping for Deep Thought, or truly ground breaking cinema, not so much.

And some of the humor I found was in the blending of actor/character/universe - like when he is talking about fondling genitalia to get the film made and says they were Wolverine's, and he had a nice set 'down under', a sequence I found funny for a few reasons, none of which involved anyone's testicles.

It acknowledges that within the X-men Universe, Wolverine is powerful and popular. On a meta level, it acknowledges that Hugh Jackman is Australian. And the statement as a whole is utter nonsense, since neither Wolverine in universe nor Hugh Jackman in the real world has any say in whether Deadpool gets a movie. It isn't laugh out loud funny, but if that isn't your cup of tea, I don't think you'd like the film.

Nicely put.

I laughed my #$%^* arse off! Every time I've seen it! (Maybe seven or eight times so far).

The opening credits were a masterpiece; and it just got better from there. I loved it, from the humour to the love scenes.

The action scenes were some of my favourites, because the parkour, wire work, and cgi (and humour) were fantastic. They kept my interest. They way they were done, it wasn't 90% blurred and incoherent the way so many so-called action scenes are. They played great music for the scenes, that really complemented what was going on.

The humour of the character, his intereactions with Dopinder and Blind Al and even Vanessa I found hilarious (I also enjoyed the byplay with Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead). The trademark fourth-wall and constant references amazed and entertained me.

I saw it in the theatre. Then, the next week I saw it in the theatre again. Then, when it was available on digital, I bought it in that form. Then, when it was out on blu-ray, I bought that. Because I loved it, wanted to support it, and wanted to be able to watch it in digital, or with commentaries, or with an audience.

Humor is a highly subjective concept. What you may find funny, others may not and the reverse is true. Personally, I've found a lot of the scenes and the lines to be very funny. The humor may be a bit dark and it requires to understand the universe a bit, but I don't think it fails here.

The story, I don't see why it is important that it was 25% present day and 75% flash-backs. It is just a way to frame it. I've found the story great in its simplicity. No complicated plots. No saving the world. I'm not going to write it here not to spoil it but I'm glad it was free of cliches, especially in a super-hero movie.

I hope they'll make a sequel. It is true, the game had some really funny parts but I don't regret investing two hours of my time and $10 for the ticket to see it. It is a solid 8 / 10 for me.

I laughed a lot and the whole cinema with me :)

The jokes about T-REX, whole Francis teasing, sex montage, all the 4th wall breaking (hero jump nearly killed me), interaction with X-Men, jokes about X-Men, the fact that he spent a lot of time getting ready and then forgot his bag in taxi, conversation with taxi driver about his love problems...

Uh... boy, that was some nice comedy :D

Probably you dozed off and did not see the movie (or was too afraid to watch you silly pussy :-) if you thing nothing happened.

Wade was diagnosed with cancer, dealt with some emotions, underwent torture, was forever changed, chased a bad guy, had some setbacks, killed a bad guy, got together with love of his life again.

Thank you everyone for your kind opinions.. I am glad to see we were able to discuss this without insults.

I agree that it was not particularly special. I found the storyline to be pretty generic when compared to other Marvel movies. Most of the fourth-wall-breaks felt forced and inorganic. It was too silly to take seriously, yet not funny enough to be a parody. Mel Brooks or the "----- Movie" people could have done it better.

reply

Just what other marvel movies are you referring to?

Storylines in most of them are crap. They force on audience this gravity that the whole world will perish if there won't be <insert random hero name> and possibly his sidekicks, but the tone, the forced comedy, setup, dialogues, characters decisions, absolutely stupid character motivation, etc. killed that suspense.

I mean... look at the last CA. The army guys is berating avengers and mentions situation like New York, WHICH THEY WERE GOING TO NUKE FFS! Or the fact that SW blowed a bit of building and possibly injured/killed few people, when if fact the explosion was meant to go off in the middle of crowded marketplace. If they cannot come with reasonable motivation for the KEY storyline element, then the movie sucks big time.

reply

Srsly, these forums are getting weirder by the day. Pretty much all of the Marvel (and other comic book movies) have sh-tty stories. Some villain wants to take over the world / destroy a big city with McGuffin x. Usually I tend to forget all details of these movies a day later or so.

This one actually had a nice, straight, personal story. The hero wants revenge on the bad guy who made him that way, torutred him and abducted his girl. I was totally happy with that setup.

I hope I didn't offend you by the "pussy" line :)

Just my attempt to say something Deadpool might say.
