Being a fan of the series and first film, it pains me to admit that Sex and the City 2 was atrocious in every aspect of the word. Where does one even begin when it comes to mentioning what's wrong with this film? A large part of the problem, I believe, is the fashion, which is largely out of touch with characters we've loved for longer than a decade. The wardrobe of each individual lady, throughout the series and also the first film, effectively did a great deal of revealing just who they were as people. Clothing and accessories were always used as a means of expression- to help tell each ladies' story. Based on the fashion present in Sex and the City 2, you would swear you never knew Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha.
A tiny fraction of the wardrobe is forgivable. All of the ladies look wonderfully glamorous at the gay wedding near the film's start, and there are a few other outfits here and there that are stunning, fashionable or trendy, at the very least. Other than that everything on display is an overly decadent eye sore; the clothing too costumey, the jewelry too clunky, the heels too bawdy. Much of the fashion appears either outdated (i.e. Miranda's blazer when on the plane to Abu Dhabi screams early 90's), outlandish (Carrie's hideous beekeeper-style hat when on the plane ride) or tasteless (many, many of Samantha's outfits throughout the entire film). One get's the feeling that the clothes are wearing the girls instead of the other way around. And while the costumes worn during the karaoke scene would look fine on the Spice Girls, they're entirely too much for these four ladies to be wearing. Also, remember in the first film how flowers showed up in a lot of Carrie's wardrobe as an homage to the show? Well, in place of that we now get Samantha and a whole lot of spikes...yes, spikes! I kept thinking, is there some reason why Samantha is walking around looking like a human pincushion? They're everywhere! There's simply no rhyme or reason to a lot of what we're given. To be fair, though, the ever-tasteful Charlotte maintains her restrained and classy sense of style amidst all of this messy fashion debacle.
From the ill-fitting to the out-of-style, and the sickeningly vibrant to the daringly dreadful, Sex and the City 2 has all of the fashion flops anyone could ever hope to find, all thrown together in one film for your convenience. The real tragedy, however, is that these style mishaps weren't the least bit honest to our four favorite ladies...
-Carrie wearing a beautiful evening gown just to watch old movies on the couch
- Carrie wearing a long billowy skirt just to go marketing in Abu Dhabi
-Every scene where the girls have to walk abreast of each other
-Camel Toe.
-3 year old's birthday party with only one 3 year old in the room
-Miranda whooping out of the car window
-Samantha blowing her hookah
-Samantha's whole hot flash/"I have sex" outburst
-The underground couture wearing Susanne Sommers-reading book club
-"Lawrence of my labiaaaaaa!"
-Carrie answering "Yes. I'm a mess" to the flight attendant asking if she had anything to declare.
-each time they did a close-up of Carrie's shoes when it had very little to do with the scene (trading shoes in the market, after flashing her leg in order to catch a cab)
Hmmm... I actually liked the film. Ill admit it is atrocious compared to the series and first movie, but unlike the first movie it wasnt depressing - at least it was fun. Cringe inducing moments would include:
-Liza Minnelli singing Single Ladies, so extremely cringe inducing, especially the bizarre moment when she stops singing. -When Stanford says 'Thank you.... Liza MinellI!" dunno why, its so cheesy. -the bizarre leprechaun music that plays whenever the nanny is on screen. -How out of touch the movie is... Charlotte is stressed out with a nanny and a housekeeper... um, hellO?!?! Also, we're supposed to find Miranda all stressed out with where to go with her career when she is perfectly financial stable enough to quit at a moments notice? -When Sam keeps saying 'hanjee' or whatever on the plane. -Abu Dhabi Doo. Enough said. -The bizarre fry-eating-woman scene, seems slightly racist. -When Miranda shouts 'whooo' at the rugby team. wtf?! -WHen Miranda randomly declares random facts about Abu Dhabi throughout the entire film. -I Am Woman.Again, enuff said. -WHen Sam sings 'Im over there.... at the table' -When Carrie sees Aidan. -When the Abu Dhabi women take off their bhurkas. -When the 4 girls popped their heads round the corner. WTF?!?!
Miranda's tourist excitement was the least cringe worthy stuff, I didn't mind Miranda and her facts. I thought that stuff was endearing to Miranda's character as the smart one. Of course she researched the place, that's her nature. I like that she was excited. Carrie and Samantha were atrocious during the whole movie.
I actually enjoyed this camp film in all of its ridiculous splendor. It wasn't as good as the television show, or the first movie, but it was fun to watch- for me. HOWEVER, one thing that did make me CRINGE was Samantha's god-awful red dress with the huge spikes on the shoulder. It looked dangerous, like someone could fall on it and get injured. It was too young, weird, and dangerous- even for Samantha. She could have looked so nice in a more tasteful, but still sexy, club dress.
I know I responded somewhere else in this thread but I have more:
- Abu Dhabi Doo
- I'm turning this inter-friend-tion into an inter-FUN-tion. Wooooo!!!!!!!
- Putting a hookah pipe all inside your mouth after who knows how many people have used and touched it
- Carrie nagging Big after the premier party when he is watching TV, as well as her totally obvious jealousy attack at the party in front of Bank of Madrid lady
- Samantha repeatedly saying Bite Me. Has anyone actually said that seriously after 1990?
- Carrie's giant hat inside the plane
- When the real housewife of Abu Dhabi smiles that creepy smile at Carrie lol
- Putting a hookah pipe all inside your mouth after who knows how many people have used and touched it
Yea my OCD went into overdrive when she did that! Oh so gross.
- Samantha repeatedly saying Bite Me. Has anyone actually said that seriously after 1990?
I am glad you brought that up because that phrase stuck out like a sore thumb every time she said it. She just sounded so stupid - not like Samantha from the series. I really REALLY hate what they did to her character in both movies, but in this one she was just a tacky, old, big mouthed, crude whore.
We should all see this film again in 10 or 20 years: by then the clothes they wear in the film will be completely out of date, ridiculous and as bad as the ugly dresses, skirts and blouses you see in movies from the 80's when women tried to be elegant. That will be cringeworthy.
These films will age very badly. They will be laughable. And the drama with these ageing 40-50 year old women who whine about the most pathetic things of their miserable lives will sound stupider than stupid. ______________________________________ The higher you fly, the faster you fall.
Entire movie was a pathetic hot mess. These women (and I use the term lightly) made me nauseous. The clothing was ridiculous and downright ugly most of the time - fashion icons for blind people?
The start when that "Irish" babysitter came along. As an Irish person, I can tell you, NONE OF US SOUND LIKE THAT! Everyone in my theatre cringed and some people laughed awkwardly and left shortly afterwards.
I would list the whole movie but I don't think that's being far but here are a few moments where I cringed"
The Gay wedding, it was so over the top
Liza Minnelli's Single Ladies number and the crowds reaction
The plane ride with the private seating areas
The Tim Gunn cameo
The girls arrival in Abu Dhabi, with the four cars and Carrie talking about how they aren't in Kansas anymore
The camel ride scene and the scene before that where they are wearing the flashy outfits
the karaoke scene
Carrie having a hissy fit over the tv
The Arab women taking off their robes revealing their fancy outfits
Carrie pulling up her slip like Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night to get a cab.
The "true colors" montage at the end, couldn't they pick another song?
I think my biggest problem with the movie is almost all the characters come across as shallow and self-absorbed. I'm a fan of the show but pretty much every character comes across as self-centered.
