Remember when Steve Martin used to be funny...?

Yeah, neither can I...

reply

actually I can...unfortunately I wasn't born yet, so I have to hear about it second-hand...but I remember that :)

reply

He is funny to me but depending on the film.
And I like some of his films.

But I don´t like Steven Martin as Inspector Clouseau, first, he doens´t look at all as Inspector Clouseau besides that its annoying he pretend to be French, annoying accent.
Accents are truly stupid but okay this is a comedy so accents are okay for a comedy.

I think I would like him so much better without the fake accent, but this time French accent is really important, as I said: It´s a comedy

Anywayz I really think, there should be better actors to play Insp Clouseau.
Though, I can enjoy Pink Panther movies... eh

Um Did you see Dream Girls? Eddie Murphy still has it.

Steve Martin used to be great. Then Tom Hanks and Jim Carey happened. They took all his roles and he was left doing films like the pink panther and cheeper by the dozen.

Oh well

Favorite Steve Martin Film: Leap of faith.

I can, but I have to say he's never been a hilarious film actor. Even his early movies which people seem to eat up always fell flat with me, movies like The Jerk. I think his movies are mostly crap, truth be told.

He was a great standup comedian when he was in his late 20s and early 30s. (He's also a very good banjo player -- seriously.) So yeah, I do remember when he used to be funny.

I must say that Peter Sellers' French accent was bad, but it was deliberately bad, in an amusing way. Martin's is just appalling, not even recognizable as French, not a satire of the accent as much as an abortion of it.

Even his appearances on talk shows, meant to show off his "incredible wit," are generally mortifying. He did a series of skits on The Colbert Report a week or so ago when he was there plugging this latest Pink Panther snoozefest, lampooning the inadvertant in-frame wanderings of a cinematographer which prompted the famous tirade by Christian Bale, and it was obviously meant to be clever and sidesplittingly funny, but was really just deeply embarrassing.

Retire, Steve.

He was funny up to 1990.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)
Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
Roxanne (1987)
¡Three Amigos! (1986)
All of Me (1984)
The Man with Two Brains (1983)
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982)
The Jerk (1979)

Then he startet doing sh*t like

Father of the Bride (1991)
Father of the Bride Part II (1995)
Bringing Down the House (2003)
Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)
Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2005)

...and the insults to Peter Sellers.

I actually liked the first FOB.

He was funny in The Jerk, the Three Amigos, and Sgt. Bilko.
I think he's at his best when he plays a serious character in a comedy (Planes, Trains, & Automobiles and Father of the Bride. I think he should go into dramas because I believe he is a good actor but just not funny anymore.

reply

he was pretty funny on the Colbert Report, so I'd say like 10-20 minutes ago

Then it's too bad they didn't just release that episode of the Colbert Report in theaters, chances are it would have done better than Pink Panther 2.

Mr. Martin no longer cares about quality, he seems to only care about the paycheck. I hope he made a fortune off of Pink Panther 2, since he's likely to be the only one to benefit from it.
