Tom Cruise is subpar in this movie.

I can't be the only one who thinks that Tom Cruise was not good in this movie. He got on my nerves more so than anything. The only other one that was worse was his girlfriend.

Dustin Hoffman made this movie great.

Pftt... the majority of Cruise haters agree, that’s for sure.

But actually, his performance is superb. (And no, he’s not carried by Hoffman.) Although he gave a more subdue performance, he conveyed as many emotions as Hoffman did (perhaps more) and he did so convincingly. In fact, seeing how his character has a big change of heart by the end of the film and goes through a transformation of sorts, I’d argue that Cruise is the one who showed more range in this film.

Hoffman indeed gave a thundering performance in Rain Man (it wouldn't be the same without him), but truthfully, Cruise makes the film for me.

I thought Cruise gives a better performance than Hoffman does who won an Oscar, but Cruise wasn't even nominated.

If you liked this movie then you liked Cruise's performance, it's as simple as that. The movie starts and finishes with Cruise, it's his character's journey. If he was subpar the movie wouldn't work on any level. It just seems to be popular to slate him.

80s Tom Cruise was basically a walking male erection. His persona was interchangeable from Top Gun and COCKtail to Color of Money and Days of Thunder.

The only break away role was his role as a crip in Born on the 4th of July where he played a walking erection for the first half of the movie.

YOU JUST BOILED CRUISE'S ENTIRE CAREER DOWN TO A BLURB,A VERY ACCURATE BLURB AT THAT...."WALKING ERECTION"....BRAVO.🙂

Cruise was so selfishly full of himself in this movie.

reply

Dustin originally wanted Mickey Rourke to play Cruise's role.

"Cruise was so selfishly full of himself in this movie."

This movie must be more boring than I realized, so many people seem to fall asleep halfway through and completely miss the culmination of his character arc.

reply

He's extremely obnoxious and annoying for the first half of the movie. I just keep wanting him to shut the FUCK up. But then finally he simmers down and is tolerable for the second half, starting around the time they check into the $8 motel.

Originally, Dustin was to play Charlie, and Bill Murray was to play Raymond. Personally, I think Bill should have played Charlie. Acting aside, he was age-appropriate.

How old is he? 53? That's no that bad.
