Would you put this among Hitchcocks best?

I personally would. It is one of his most ambitious films. The characters are 3 dimensional, the script is cracking and the story is so Hitchcockian. My 3rd or 4th favorite of his.

ROPE is a very experimental-and highly underrated-Hitchcock film. It's evident from the reviews that this is love it or hate it film.

It's still an interesting and entertaining movie.

For me, second only to Psycho. Yes, Rear Window, North by Northwest and Vertigo are excelent movies, but when the dust is settled they dont have the everlasting effect.

No, but it's difficult to exceed The Birds, Psycho, North by Northwest, Vertigo, Rear Window, Dial M for Murder, Strangers on a Train, Notorious, Shadow of a Doubt, Rebecca, and The Lady Vanishes. It might be better than Lifeboat, though. But really, it's more a testament to the great man's talent.

Top 3

1- Vertigo (10/10): a Visually beautiful and psychologically engrossing film

2- Dial M For Murder (9/10) : some minor flaws prevented (in my opinion) it to fulfill better

3- North by Northwest (9/10)

Rope is my second favourite Hitchcock film.

I was just shoved off a cliff. I still have not landed.

reply

I'd rank it just behind Psycho and (I know it's heresy) ahead of Vertigo.

reply

I haven't seen a lot of Hitchcock, only Dial M For Murder, Vertigo, Psycho, The Birds, Shadow of A Doubt and Rear Window. I think that Vertigo and Rear Window are his best, but Rope comes close, along with Shadow of a Doubt.

Definitely better than The Birds, most likely my least favorite, after than it is hard to say which is better. On the plus side it has Jimmy Stewart so it towards the top of the list in my book.

reply

I agree, so far The Birds is the weakest Hitchock I've seen.

hey sorry hitchcock fans but i didnt like vertigo or psycho although at that time the concept would have blown people's mind but i liked this one a lot
can anyone tell me some more of his films which are like ROPE so that i can enjoy hitchcock more.
Thanks in advance

reply

strangewhatlovedoes, you might like Strangers on a Train. that and Rope are considered Hitchcock's "gay films." and both star Farley Granger.

I would put Rope in the bottom half of a top 20. interesting, experimental ambitious but lacking in that special Hitchcock touch that makes Vertigo, Psycho, Rear Window, Notorious and Shadow of a Doubt such classics. Hitchcock seems bored with it outside the admittedly fascinating one take technique.

I also agree that James Mason would have been great. Or maybe Joseph Cotten as well

I've only seen seven Hitchcock films, but it's currently up their with my favourites so far.

reply

It certainly is is most ambitious, But the more I watch it the more it ranks up a notch whereas Vertigo slides below...its the concept of the film, the weird logic of their motive which fascinates me a lot.

For me, this film is in the bottom 25% of Hitchcock films. My dislike for it stems at least partly from my great familiarity with the real-life Leopold and Loeb case which was its inspiration.

reply

I've not seen every Hitchcock film but this is definitely in my top 3, along with Psycho and Rear Window.
