Would you put this among Hitchcocks best?

I personally would. It is one of his most ambitious films. The characters are 3 dimensional, the script is cracking and the story is so Hitchcockian. My 3rd or 4th favorite of his.

Wait, wait. Rope lacked SUSPENSE?

Sorry, but what were you smoking when you watched this movie? The ENTIRE plot revolves around a dinner party eating around a chest containing a dead man's corpse, all in one continuous take. It's probably the most suspenseful premise in cinematic history.

Certainly not. Nowhere near his top ten. I have no idea how Rope has an 8.1 rating here on IMDB.

Personally I found the dialogue in Rope extremely dull and uninteresting for the most part, which is rare for a Hitchcock film. The first half hour of the movie particularly is a perfect cure for insomnia. Just a load of hard boiled waffling and little else.

I agree with Buddy Love. I am bewildered by the very high praise bestowed upon this movie on IMDb. Hitchcock is one of the greatest of all time, no doubt, but he had a bit of stinkers, and this is one of them, though it may be the most interesting one. The long take technique was at first a bit interesting, then became awkward and dull. James Stewart was miscast, although Dall and Granger were good. There are a few great moments, but it is mostly awkward. Many Hitchcocks better than this!

I'd definitely put it in the Top 10 if not the Top 5.

Yes! I would also add "Frenzy" and "Shadow of a Doubt".

I definitely put this in his upper tier mainly for the same reasons you've just listed, a wonderful film...
