TV shows you loved but eventually gave up on.

I was really into The Walking Dead, I read the comics, have a Rick Grimes bobble head and Daryl crossbow, several T shirts… But by season 6 many of the best characters were dead and the new characters were silly. I gave up watching it.

Dexter was great through season 4.
A show about a serial killer who murders serial killers and perverts was a pretty cool idea. Eventually the writing got wonky and I bailed.

Did you ever quit a favorite show and why?

reply

I’m normally there for the long haul, however: -
Revolution (2012) - the premise was excellent; the world wakes up one day and there’s no electricity. Season 1 was epic, but by the end of season 2 I’d had enough ☹️

reply

DUDE...REVOLUTION!...SEASON ONE WAS SO DAMN GOOD...AND INDEED...SEASON TWO BECAME A CHORE....NOBODY KNOWS THAT SHOW THOUGH...THAT'S ANOTHER COOL POINT FOR YOU.😎

reply

I take my TV viewing very seriously and watch all kinds of stuff, I just don’t bang on about it 😉

reply

DID YOU SEE THE ONE SEASON WONDER STARRING LAKE BELL ENTITLED THE SURFACE?...I REALLY DUG THAT ONE.

reply

No - I’ll add it to my ever expanding watch list.

reply

IT IS AWESOME...THEY HAD A SUSPICION THEY WOULD NOT BE GETTING A SEASON TWO...SO THEY WRAPPED SEASON IN A WAY THAT FUNCTIONS AS AN ENDING BUT ALSO LEFT THE DOOR OPEN.

reply

I don’t think they even screened season two here. I liked the premise as well but I don’t think they did much with it.

reply

Buffy. It was definitely my favourite show for the first 3 seasons, but in the 4th season the tone changed, the main story arc was just bad and boring, important characters left and the rest of the characters just got ruined.

reply

WILLOW BEING A LESBIAN WASN'T THAT BAD.

reply

It was a lame retcon, but it wasn't just that. Season 4 had bigger problems. Didn't like any of the new characters eithers.

reply

I AM A BIG NEUTERED SPIKE FAN...SO I KIND OF PREFER LATER SEASONS...THERE IS DEFINITELY A TONE SHIFT IN THE MIDDLE THOUGH.

reply

I'm a big fan of early Spike. The arrival of Dawn and realizing she wasn't going to go away was actually what made me give up the show. I would still read summaries, but by season 6 I knew I was never going to come back the show.

reply

HONESTLY...I WOULD NEVER HAVE WATCHED IT TO BEGIN WITH...BUT I HAVE A SISTER WHO IS THREE YEARS YOUNGER THAN ME...AND BUFFY WAS/IS HER FAVORITE SHOW...SO I SAW THEM ALL,MULTIPLE TIMES...SAME WITH CHARMED AND THE SHOW THAT BCAME MY FAVORITE...ESPECIALLY THE FIRST SEASON...ANGEL...LONG LIVE DOYLE!

reply

I especially love the first season of Charmed, but stopped watching after Shannon left. I wasn't really loving it anymore anyway. Never made the switch to Angel. I remember bits and pieces from when that Irish guy from Roseanne was still on the show. He was Doyle, right?

reply

YES...HE WAS...HE SACRIFIFICES HIMSELF AT THE END OF SEASON ONE...SEASON ONE WAS DARK AND GRITTY AND FILLED WITH UNHAPPY ENDINGS AND DARK CHOICES...SEASON TWO AND ON HAD MORE OF THAT LATER BUFFY TONE.

reply

Wow, he really left the show that early? Did it have to do with his substance abuse problems or did Whedon just enjoy upsetting the fans?

reply

I AM NOT SURE...BUT DOYLE WAS AWESOME AND HIS ABSENCE WAS NEVER FILLED FOR ME.

reply

Everyone: "The Walking Dead"

I basically gave up during season after Rick left/The Whisperers joined, not that the new season was particularly bad, but I felt the show had lived out its natural course, and there wasn't much more to say (although I see that the show ended a season or two later, which makes me wonder if I should have stuck it out for a couple more years).

reply

Yes, I’ll probably watch the later seasons at some point but many of the newer storylines are just boring and the new characters seemed goofy.

Sometimes a short series is better, I think The Wire handled the writing pretty well although the final season was a bit of a reach.

Band Of Brothers and the Pacific were both solid gold from start to finish.

reply

YOU DON'T LIKE HIPPIE NINJAS NAMED JESUS?

reply

They killed Jesus before I gave up on the show. Some of the characters that came after him were goofier.

reply

I SAW JESUS DIE...RIGHT AFTER THAT IS WHEN THE "WIFE" AND I STOPPED WATCHING TV TOGETHER...SO THAT IS PRETTY MUCH WHERE I STOPPED WATCHING THE SHOW.

reply

I don't blame you. Jesus (the character, not the deity) was awesome.

reply

The deity is more awesomer.

reply

YEAH...HE IS PRETTY COOL...I SAW HIM ON SOUTH PARK...HE FUCKED THE DEVIL UP.🙂

reply

Troof!

reply

I didn’t care for Jesus in the show, he was cool in the comic books though.

reply

It went in way too long. There needs to be some hope and purpose it felt like they were just going to keep getting picked off or tortured. It would have been great as a mini series or a few seasons with a tight storyline.

reply

I THINK IF IT WAS BEING ADAPTED TODAY...THAT WOULD BE HOW THEY WOULD HANDLE IT.

reply

AFTER SEASON THREE THE WALKING DEAD BECAME SOMETHING ELSE...I GAVE IT SOME TIME...BUT LOST MY INTEREST RIGHT AROUND THE TIME ABRAHAM LOST HIS HEAD.

reply

I actually kind of liked that moment. Abraham was one of my very favourite characters, but I knew someone had to go (and even though I hadn't read the comics, my guess was Abraham and/or Glen, which turned out to be correct). However, he went out like a trouper (which is partly why I guessed that Negan had picked him to clobber; all the other characters were whimpering, even Daryl, but Abraham was defiant, and basically kneeling upright and basically egging on Negan to pick him instead of the others, cos that's the type of decent, courageous type of guy he was). In a show where practically everyone dies, it's the way they die that matters, and Abraham went out effectively saying "I'm gonna take one for the team."

reply

ABSOLUTELY...DUDE WENT OUT ROCK HARD...THE FOLLOWING SEASON WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR ME THOUGH.

reply

Season 7 had an excellent first episode and the rest was trash.

Signed, million man.

reply

Blindspot

Jane Doe; but love ruins everything!
In this case anyway.

reply

The Simpsons. It went from being the best show on TV to become something to watch once and forget, then ultimately became a sad, unwatchable parody of itself.

reply

Oh wow...I gave up years ago...maybe 20 years ago (mid 00s)!

reply

I haven’t watched it in years nor have I seen South Park in ages.

Both were clever shows but writing the same characters year in and year out must be hard.

reply

When it started it was somewhat politically incorrect and rebellious as it went on that sadly changed. I can’t believe it is up to season 34!

reply

Westworld - Gave up somewhere in Season 3, I think I stuck it out anyway...didn't bother with Season 4.

Billions - Season 5 was split into two parts due to the pandemic. After watching Part 1, I never went back.

Dexter - I didn't give up, but I didn't like the final season at all.

reply

I never watched Westworld or Billions, but my wife and the neighbors gabbed billions up a lot. It seemed too ‘adult drama’ for me, but I admit I’m often immature😄

reply

I stopped watching Dexter when Jimmy Smits joined.

reply

Westworld turned into simply 'World'.

reply

Enjoyed the first season. Quickly lost interest after, when it started getting busy.

reply

The "Battlestar Galactica" remake. I LOVED the first season, really liked the second... and then I stopped tuning in.

It really was a pity, the show seemed to get off to such a great start, with infinitely more depth and interest than the cheesy seventies original.

reply

I liked it a lot too but ultimately quit it.

reply

Did anyone stick it out?

reply

I did, but I was an Uber fan.

It was pretty painful to watch the quality drop so dramatically.

reply

Hey, I stuck out all 8 seasons of "Game of Thrones"! I KNOW PAIN!!!

And if you've seen both shows, which took a worse dive in quality? The thing is, I've never seen the final season of "BG" so I can't judge, but the last season of "GoT" was the absolute worst tank in quality I've ever seen in 60 years. It wasn't a dip in quality, it was a suicide jump off of El Capitan!

reply

ouch!

i did watch ( suffer through? ) both

and yes, imho GOT was worse

reply

So how bad were the last seasons of "BG", in comparison? It was pretty clear they were losing the plot, so did the plot just wander off, or did it jump off a bridge?

reply

it was a slower dive than GOT, but it also had fewer seasons

i would say S3 was similar to 5/6

and S4 was similar to 7/8

reply

OMG, it actually got S8 bad??????

If so, I'm SO glad I quit when I did!

reply

sorry to be the bearer of such bad news, lol

but at least i hopefully saved you from wasting any time on it

reply

I already saved myself the time, thank you, like I said I quit somewhere in S3.

But I've always vaguely wondered if I should have caught up, so thanks!

reply

you are very welcome

reply

I have to disagree with the other poster. I love BG and watched all of it. It did take a bit of a dip in the later part of S3, but not to a point where it becomes unwatchable. S4 was good and I personally loved the ending of the series.

You should give it another go. The ending wasn't disappointing at all and even if you'll think it is, certainly nowhere near a letdown as GoT.
