What did you watch this week fam? (01/15-01/21)CLOSED

My week:

Yesterday (2019 DVD): Right off the first minutes of this movie I knew I was gonna love it but then again, Danny Boyle only made 2 movies I didn’t love. One minor thing bothered me with this film and it’s the fact that when he wakes up at the hospital, he does three beetle references inside what looks like one afternoon when they could’ve just kept the third one which was the song Yesterday. It took away from the natural of it. Otherwise, the story is great and fun, the cinematography is top notch, the soundtrack is on point and the cast is terrific. It was very funny, charming and smart, if a little corny at times. I am a pretty big Beatles fan, I am glad I bought it. I’d rate the first hour 8 and the second 7. My rating: 7.5/10

Valerian and the city of a thousand planets (2017 DVD): The cinematography, special FX, settings and costumes were all way above my expectations. The scene where he runs through walls was a 10/10. As for the pole dancing scene, let’s say it overstayed its welcome. The story was alright, as was the cast. I see lots of complaints about the two leads and although I see where they’re all coming from, I personally enjoy those two actors, especially DeHann who starred in a favourite of mine; Two lovers and a bear. The weakest aspect was the dialogues. It was sometimes corny or immature. My rating: 7/10

Outlaws and angels (2016 tubi): I think they made the best with what they had to work with and the end result of this gritty western is of respectable quality. I applaud everyone’s effort in making this a slick, bloody and wicked ride. I it was surprisingly unpredictable genuine and I truly enjoyed it. 7.5/10

Punk’d S2 (2021 Roku): I enjoyed season one and the short length format but now, after watching LOTS of Greg Guillotin on YouTube, these pranks were WAF! (WeakAsFuck). My rating: 5/10

The Beasts (2022): Great film about feuding neighbours who take things too far. The lead actor was in the first scene of Inglorious Basterds and he gives a great performance here. You pretty much cheer for him the entire film. Quite surprised how much I liked this one considering that I expected nothing. 8/10.

Luther (TV series season 1): I've seen the entire series before, but the movie is coming out on streaming in March, so I want to rewatch the series as a refresher course. I just finished season 1 and it's exactly as good as I remember. What I like about the series is that they don't try too hard to be cool like a lot of procedural American films do. 8.5/10

Troll (2022): A Norwegian film about... you guessed it. A troll. Really good visual effects on the troll, but the films itself is forgettable. 6/10

Decision to Leave (2022): Probably the best film I've seen this year. Very fast paced, and a lot of weird stuff goes on that's common in Korean film. Thriller/comedy and a little action. What more could you ask for? It's from the director of "Oldboy". 9/10

reply

i tried to watch decision to leave. i bailed out ten minutes or so in.

reply

You should stick with it. I know it feels like a lot going on at first.

reply

Good stuff! Can’t wait to see Decision to leave. The beasts looks like something I’d like too.

reply

Definitely recommend both.

Every time I see this movie at my DVd store I come Close to buying it. I am hoping for the price to drop as it is still 15$…

You drive a hard bargain, Stony. Wait a minute, they still have DVD stores?

🤨

reply

Yes, we still have Sunrise record, Archambault and a used store called Cdtroque. Otherwise there is always Wal-Mart

reply

Interesting, never heard of any of them, except of course, Wal-Mart.

Ahoy!

Valerian and the city of a thousand planets (2017): They say I have seen it, but I have absolutely no recollection of it, which rarely happens. The trailer looks good indeed (at least for 2017), so I'd give it a 7,5/10. I liked De Haan in Chronicle (2012).

This week I watched:

Emily the Criminal (2022): Some annoyingly dumb decision making by the characters, but otherwise the film was pretty well built. 6,5/10

Old (2021): I'm a sucker for stupid M. Night Shyamalan movies. This was no exception... So many errors in the script, and the trademark unintended hilarous scenes. But it kept me entertained despite the majority of it being shot at one location. Plus it makes you think about real life and dealing wih aging. 5/10

Started SE21 of Family Guy. It just occured to me, that I've been following the Griffins' life for almost 15 years now. It's a comforting experience to watch this cartoon.

reply

ISN'T IT AMAZING HOW A SHOW LIKE FAMILY GUY CAN GO SO LONG IT JUST BECOMES PART OF YOUR LIFE...I'VE BEEN WATCHING THOSE FOUL MOUTHED KIDS ON SOUTH PARK SINCE HIGH SCHOOL...I AM 41 NOW!

reply

I haven’t seen yours and although I love the Simpsons and South Park, I never was a family guy kind of guy.

reply

Your words had their impact on me. I looked up Chronicle after you mentioned it and it looked like something I could really like so I ordered it on Amazon. Came in today! :) 👍

Haven’t seen yours this week.

These past few days, I watched

The Chosen - Season 3 episode 3. I really love this show but this episode seemed to have more embellishment than usual.
Sing Street - Oh boy this was fantastic, I even did one of the songs for Karaoke on Saturday
Don't Pick up the Phone - Netflix. Watched the entire first episode and half of the second, it was too late. Extremely disturbing and made me angry and how dumb people can be when it comes to obeying perceived authority.

reply

None of yours but if you do karaoke your cool in my book.

Cyborg: 7/10 (due for rewatch)

reply

I usually don’t like lots of slow motion action scenes, but Cyborg does it just right.

Yesterday 8/10

I watched:

Love Is News 1937 6/10 This was just alright.

This Gun for Hire 1942 6/10 This didn't do much for me.

Oliver Twist 1948 6/10 A couple good moments, but overall not that interesting.

A Woman’s Vengeance 1948 7/10 Good performances from the cast and an interesting story.

To Live and Die in L.A. 1985 5/10 , I didn't enjoy this. The story didn't really interest me. I wasn't engaged and couldn't care about the characters. The film dragged on for me and felt longer than it was.

Tangier 1946 6/10 This was just alright.

The Square Jungle 1955 7/10 Tony Curtis does a good job in this well written film.

A Bullet for Joey 1955 6/10 A couple interesting moments, but this was underwhelming.

Flesh and Fury 1952 8/10 I really liked this. Tony Curtis is fantastic and the rest of the cast are very good too.

Ship of Fools 1965 (rewatch) 7/10 The actors did a fine job and I felt the ensemble worked well together.

My Dear Killer 1972 7/10 This was fairly interesting.

Arabella: Black Angel 1989 Good clean fun for the whole family. Watch it with your church group.
