Movie rape, bad. Movie violence just fine.

Again again, let me get this straight:

Depicting rape in a movie is triggering and bad, causes MENTAL reactions, according to studies I guess.
Depicting violent shootings, death etc does NOT cause MENTAL reactions?
Colombine killers playing shooter games and dressing like The Matrix was just coincidence? NOT caused by their media stimuli? Just one example.

How many quadruple standards are there? Is there a blog somewhere that lists them all?

I've thought about this before. If there's a rape scene in movie, people give out a trigger warning. However if there's something like a car crash, no warning is given.

reply

“people give out a trigger warning”

Who are these people? I’ve watched a lot of movies and I’ve never been the recipient of a trigger warning.

reply

Not Okay (2022) had one when the movie started.

reply

That’s not okay in my book.

reply

That's not fair.

reply

When people are needlessly killed in movies I feel it is wrong.

reply

Are you implying that you want to see more rape? 🤔

reply

of course not. just trying to wrap my head around the moving morality goal posts: what's good this minute, what's bad

new movie on netflix shows 3 rape scenes, and someone was talking about media affecting people.... except many say it also doesn't? so confusing

reply

He was just wondering Andy about why we look at that subject in such a more extraordinarily emotional and angry way than we do, even in fictional movies, about other forms of violence, such as killings and whatnot?

reply

And even if he "did" want to "see more of it", he could simply choose to watch more movies that depict it, not to address one particular issue around it and figure out why it is.

reply

I'll make the contrast even more jarring by pointing out that violence and murder is totally okay on mainstream network television, but consensual sex is not.

Violence in PG films is totally acceptable, but the nude (natural) human body is somehow "bad." We're so backwards as a society.

reply

THEY TRIED YOUR NO VIOLENCE,EVERYBODY NUDE AND FUCKING THING IN THE 60'S...IT DIDN'T WORK OUT. NOEMOJI

reply

I'm betting a lot more people are violently assaulted than sexually assaulted (note, I am NOT diminishing sexual assault in any way), so, shouldn't violence be TRIGGERING people as well?

reply

And if a (fictitious) animal gets killed or hurt, especially if it's a dog, we get HUGE outrage!

reply

I remember during the first season of The Walking Dead, so many people were outraged that a horse was swarmed and eaten by zombies. In a show where the undead eat the living. Seriously.

reply

OUTRAGED IS WRONG...UPSET BY IS CORRECT...I AM ONE OF THOSE WHO IS UPSET BY ANIMAL DEATHS...NOT OUTRAGED.

reply

Some films like "Cannibal Holocaust" (1980) by Ruggero Deodato depicted REAL animal killings and not only was there a huge outrage from the audience, but there were legal issues there as well.

reply

I know that. I'm referring to the VAST preponderance of movies that depict animal deaths on/or abuse. People get incensed even when no animals are actually harmed.

reply

Its probably that the former including in this day and age is just a more sensitive issue overall that strikes a far greater chord with a lot of people.

reply

Rape is much more personal and usually longer.
Murder is more "cold", you can kill someone who is 50 meter than you, and go home. Without any physical contact between the victim and criminal.

Visually watching a rape scene is more difficult than any other violent scenes.
And don't underestimate the studies, it's really hard for rape victims watching these scenes.
Many directors I believe prefer to avoid it, even before the PC era, because they know it's hard for the audience to watch it, and it's also hard for the actors themselves.

reply

it seems weird they put THREE scenes in this netflix movie. -- but of course, more free press for the controversy: NETFLIX
