Things you were disappointed to discover?

For me, I was disappointed to discover that so many cool songs were ripping off beats/chords from older stuff (especially the 1970s). I've learned to make peace with it - especially if they're not ripping off the song entirely.

As an adult I was disappointed to learn that, unlike during one's school years, there is no summer break. Slog on.

reply

unless you are a teacher.

reply

Teachers get a break from students, but many (not all) of them work all summer: teaching summer school, training to keep their certificate up-to-date, teacher seminars, etc. Mrs Neighbor is a school nurse and she works all summer, although she won't this summer since they're moving up north. She expects to get a job with a school district up there since she's not ready to retire from working.

That Santa wasn't real.

Broke my heart!

That Fruit Loops have all the same flavor, not individual lemon, cherry, orange.

I can't eat them now without thinking of it.

Like eating a bunch of clones.

Golden showers were totally not what I was expecting 🙃

Yeah and don't Google "cream pie"!

I actually like that one. Except eating the cream pie.

That hard work doesn't always pay off.

trying to not make this political - but discovering how ruthless my country (the US) had been at shaping the destinies of relatively powerless people esp. in foreign countries.

basically, that the hat we wear around the world is, at best, dingy gray.

also, that the hated russians actually beat the germans, not the allies, in WWII. and paid the price.

reply

Everything you said is a LIE/Russian propaganda and is the reason why, more than ever, the United States needs to start forcing everyone to pass a citizenship test, even American-born citizens.

reply

I beg to differ. But I'm not going to argue, because that would be a political direction.

These are simply things I was disappointed to discover. You may not have or may never discover them.

The safest way to avoid such discoveries is to avoid history like the plague.

[German Dead] By Front (per R. Overmans)[30]
Front Total Dead
Eastern Front until 12/31/44 2,742,909
Western Front until 12/31/44 339,957
Final Battles in Germany (East & West fronts Jan.-May, 1945) 1,230,045

You can't "beg to differ," because what you said is not factual.

Case in point. You said:

also, that the hated russians actually beat the germans, not the allies, in WWII. and paid the price.

The Russians beat the Germans, but not the Allies? But the Russians WERE the Allies. Who told told you that Russians were separate from the Allies? Every history book written since WW2 states that the Allied powers were Great Britain, France, US and Russia. But you "discovered" Russia was somehow "separate" from the Allied powers?

Encyclopedia Brittanica: https://www.britannica.com/topic/Allied-powers-World-War-II
Military Wikia:https://military.wikia.org/wiki/Allies_of_World_War_II
The National WW2 Museum: https://www.nationalww2museum.org/war/articles/big-three

Again, where did you learn that Russia weren't also part of the Allies?

Oh, wait, I remember...this is Putin's pathetic attempt at trying to hog all the glory of WW2 for Russia--LIE and say that the Russians weren't part of the coalition of Allied forces that fought against the Nazis, so he could further argue that it was all Russia winning the war and no one else.

Oh, BTW, since you're interested in "discovering" history, here's what the Russians did after the Allies won the war. The so-called "saviors" of WW2 literally raped their way across Europe. No one was spared, not even old women or children. They raped so many women that one Red Army general bragged that there were 2 million Russian babies being born in Germany. And this isn't "propaganda"; there are photos, footage, witness accounts:

you seem very wound up about this - let's review :

To this day I remember how disappointed I was in the way the board game Green Ghost worked. (I had seen the TV ads.) The board had spaces that were apparently open to below, and if you landed on one, your piece dropped in, and MAGICALLY reappeared, rising like a phoenix up through another open space. HOW?? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HOW! Turned out the game board was raised on legs, you hold your hand underneath to catch the piece, then push the piece up through another space.

On the plus side it made me something of a skeptic.
