Is the media brainwashing us?

Think about it. Everyone is obsessed with wearing masks everywhere. People will not leave their homes or travel to different counties (unless it is to work at a company or hospital that provides essential services) or on planes....my husband canceled our trip last month because he was afraid of getting the coronavirus. People refuse to sit next to each other and stand far away from you if they don't know you...I have never lived through something like this. I can't even visit my mom who lives in the next county 45 minutes away from where I live. I understand that this is a new virus to us but please. I truly believe if you take care of your body, eat healthy, sleep a lot, up your vitamin C intake, you'll be fine. I don't think wearing a barrier (aka a mask) over your mouth (that can be quite suffocating at times) is truly going to help you. The whole world is obsessed with watching the media and following all their rule about the coronavirus to the letter....in my opinion, the world is completely brainwashed right now....it's quite frightening actually....

reply

Not if you don't let them. Critical thinking skills are your friend.

reply

I agree with you. It's important to think of yourself and not be influenced by others....

reply

👍 Yep, look at the facts and decide for yourself.

reply

I take it you meant to say it's important to think for yourself? We are all influenced by others. There are people who know a lot more than we do about a wide variety of things, so it'd be foolish to not be influenced by people who know more about a given topic than we do.

But at the same time, not all experts are equal, so we have to figure out how best to pick and choose whom we put our trust in, and ultimately decide what we think is best.

reply

No. We can judge what sources we trust and which we should ignore. Some certain goons want to convince us we shouldn't trust our established media outlets, but this is an effort to undermine democracy itself.

reply

You are very funny.

reply

The media outlets themselves are the ones trying to undermine democracy. You're just a patsy.

reply

I just encountered a new expression that could very well take hold, " corona shaming" someone. *eye-roll*

reply

Probably, but what are you gonna do?

Seriously I think everyone is over the media's relentless covid-19 coverage, but you would be pretty naive to expect it to be any different during a global pandemic.

We need to be informed. Without the media we only have the government to inform / direct us. Some may be comfortable with that, but I will take my chances by carefully selecting the source of my news and the amount of time I spend watching it. One thing I will not have is a would-be dictator demonizing the media at every given opportunity to deflect from their own numerous failings. Fake News? Fake Prez, more like it.

reply

Research the subject and you will suspect it no more. What is suspicion and rumor will become fact.

Enjoy.

Covid 19 is now the leading cause of mortality in the USA, claiming slightly over 1700 lives per day.

Just behind, heart attack 1650 per day

Cancer 1580 per day.

reply

Wow. And yet Georgia is going to be opening up the state???

reply

Yeah, those #s make clear to me the danger of this disease.

Sweden is taking a hands off approach, the government not doing anything.

They are willing to take their lumps early, hoping that 'heard immunity' will kick in later and the virus will peeter out.

reply

Those are some scary stats....

reply

The "it's a hoax by the media" belief is old. It sounds like denial.

The more educated people and policy-makers are listening to medical doctors and scientists in order to follow their advice. They advise to wear masks and social distance to limit the infection rate. Remain home to lower your chance of getting sick. The media is only delivering the information to the public. Better to be well-informed than stumbling in the dark.

reply

What does the media get out of everyone wearing a mask and not being able to buy stuff from their sponsers?

reply

Exactly.
"it's a hoax by the media" is something spouted by morons who believe if they dont want/like something - say its a hoax , that will make it true and the problem will go away .
Donald Trump springs to mind
