Christmas music

What are your thoughts? Love it? Can't stand it? Annoyed when you start hearing it in November?

It's kind of my guilty pleasure. I think because I associate those old carols with so many happy family Christmas celebrations in my childhood and youth, times that can never be recreated because of loss and separation, I can go right back there through memories those songs trigger.

O Holy Night is my favourite, which is ironic in a way given the lack of a single religious bone in my body. Something about that song is just epic, the ridiculous key change at the end maybe, I don't know, it just hits me right in that good-will-to-all-men spot.

No, just don't.

Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhh!

I fucking HATE christmas music!

Same banal crap played a million times a year, every year, everywhere in public. I can only listen to the same damn crappy songs a few times before they begin to get really annoying, so after hearing "All I Want For Xmas" 200 billion times I could kill.

You’re not alone Otter I think most people I know feel the same. I’m a lot to handle at Christmas.

You’re dead right Mariah on repeat will test the patience of even the most festive.

reply

It's probably nostalgia. I love christmas music, not in November though.
O Holy Night makes me tear up almost every time.

O Holy Night makes me cry too; it is a very emotional song especially when it is sung by Johnny Mathis...

reply

I love Christmas music and I usually go get a Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving and that’s when the music starts.

reply

I like Christmas music.

reply

Well Bing was the king of Christmas.

I didn't even know he did that song though, I grew up with the Kenny Rogers version. That's my parents for you.

reply

Can't stand it. Jingle Bell Rock makes waterboarding seem humane!

reply

Pray you never hear Brenda Lee sing Jingle Bell Rock.

And how many kids have wondered who Round John Virgin is?

reply

haha Round John Virgin, I love it.

Jingle Bell Rock is a rockabilly classic! I would have thought it would be one of the more popular Xmas tunes.

reply

Nice to meet someone who knows what Rockabilly is/was—the precursor to the marriage of Countey and Rock, as outlined in the movie Rhinestone, with Dolly Parton and Sylvester Stallone, the 2 best chests of their era in Hollywood. If they’d stripped to the waist, the movie would have BOFFO’D! Brenda Lee, “little Miss Dynamite,” was 1 my teen fantasies.

reply

Oh yes, it’s one of my favourite genres. Wanda Jackson, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, even early Elvis. I love it all.

reply

You should listen to the song Someday at Christmas by Stevie Wonder. I absolutely love that song; it is so good!

reply

I haven't heard that one, but I do love Stevie. I'll check it out. Thanks!

reply

You can hear it on YouTube.
