Cerebral films.

Looking for something I haven't seen yet that really makes you think for a long time afterward, like The Man From Earth.

Anyone got any suggestions?

reply

Cinema Paradiso.

[deleted]

Um, clearly you have never seen Cinema Paradiso, which is an absolutely beautiful film if you love cinema and movies in general, which was directed by Giuseppe Tornatore and Ennio Morricone soundtrack.

Not sure what film you are thinking of, but it wasn't this!

reply

Yes, you are correct, I thought it was a Fellini movie. I have never seen Cinema blah blah blah. Ennio Morricone scored Dario Argento's Animal Trilogy.

reply

I saw Ennio Morricone conducting the other week. Was amazing!

reply

What? No way! Where at?

reply

Antwerp Palais.

If you want to go see him live, then you need to book tickets now as he is not going to be touring much longer (he is 90 years old).

I was lucky in that he added a few extra dates to this year (which was supposed to be his last) and he has decided to add some next year also.

reply

So what Fellini movie were you thinking of and what was your opinion???

You should really give Cinema Paradiso a try, I watched North Korean movies because of you!

reply

We watched La Strada last weekend - my first Fellini movie. My wife loved it. I wanted to know if the Gelsomina character had Stockholm Syndrome ?

reply

What makes you think I've seen La Strada?😐

reply

You should see it.

reply

Sounds like a fun movie.

reply

Expand that mind of yours. 🤟🤟🤟

reply

Am I not "eclectic" enough already???

reply

There is the Korean pop stuff.

Or this:

reply

I thought you didn't like hip hop ?

reply

When did I say that? I dislike a lot of hip hop, especially nowadays, but there's hip hop that I do like.

reply

how about this one - I became a fan of this because my son played it over and over ten years ago.

reply

Whatever happened to Akon?!

reply

I checked - he's still alive and he not in jail for having sex with 14 year olds. Otherwise his career seems to be in the tank.

reply

Maybe he should move to Nigeria. He would fit right in with his autotune music.

reply

Cher started autotone

reply

I actually like that song. I wonder if Cher would be popular in Nigeria.🤔

reply

All women like that song. Cher was popular when she made this video

reply

I like that song as well, but she looks incredibly trashy in that video. Showing off her almost naked ass in front of her son!

reply

takes nerve to wear that outfit

reply

Nah, just bad taste.

reply

I'd thought you would be more liberal on such things.

reply

There's a difference between sexy and just plain trashy. And she has a flat butt at that.

reply

My second favorite movie of all time

reply

I don't see how she fell in love with Zampano.

reply

She was put in the situation to save her family from starvation, and probably adapted to the situation, being stuck with him.

reply

I'm personally not a fan of the film, but people seem to love Waking Life (2001). It's all about existentialism.

Then you have:
Coherence (2013)
Primer (2004)
Mr. Nobody (2009)
Timecrimes (2007)
Predestination (2014)
Cube (1997)
Exam (2009)

reply

Thanks for the recommendations, but have seen them all too.

reply

How about cerebral in terms of visual and mood? If so, Beyond the Black Rainbow is a decent film.

reply

It is, as I have also seen it. I do like those types of movies too. Thanks.

reply

The Big Sleep 1946 - if you can understand the plot you are smarter than me.

reply

Not seen it. Sounds interesting. Will look out for it. Thanks

reply

I see someone mentioned Primer (2004) which I was going to mention. I will also mention Upstream Colour (2013) if you haven't seen it.

Although it's a little dated, I've always enjoyed Strange Days (1995).

reply

Not sure if I have seen Strange Days (will add it to the list anyway), but I have seen Upstream Colour. Thanks.

reply

Solaris (1971)

reply

I have seen the remake (love the soundtrack) but never the original. Added to the list. Thanks.

reply

The Andromeda Strain (1971)

reply

Great film (which I have seen). Thanks.

reply

Intellectual films? That’s not been the norm for the past 30 years. Let me think:🤔

Se7en
No Way Out
The Guardian
Mystic River
Taking Chance (I’ve watched this one 5 times and I still sob😭)
We Were Soldiers (Same as above, but with ire)
Blackhawk Down ( ditto)
Band of Brothers

reply

I know, there are so few made lately that it is hard trying to find the unknown gems.

Have seen Se7en, Mystic River and I think I saw No Way Out, so I will add the others to the list. Thanks.

reply

I’m attempting to list movies which rate at least a 7 in a 1 out of 10 scale.

Also a list by decade; some may be dated (graphics) but great movies.

reply

Thanks for those lists, but great doesn't always mean cerebral. I am looking for the type of movies that make your head hurt from thinking about them.

There are some good titles in those lists that I will be adding to my watchlist. Thanks

reply

L'appartement.

reply

Which year (there are 3 listed with that name)?

reply

1996.

reply

Cheers. Will look out for it.
