Cerebral films.

Looking for something I haven't seen yet that really makes you think for a long time afterward, like The Man From Earth.

Anyone got any suggestions?

A Ghost Story (2017)

Final Approach (1991)

Touted as being the first film with fully digital sound, this movie never made it to DVD or Blu ray, although it was released on 12" laser disk.

I have a VHS copy (god, I'm old...) and I found this: May be NSFW due to some language & brief nudity.

I'll admit to having a soft spot for the red-hot, fire-breathing Mach 3 monster that's pretty much a cast member in the film and a necessary element of the story.

Kind of hard to watch without a vhs or laserdisc player. Had a quick look around and haven't seen it made to any other format. Thanks for the info though. I will add it to my IMDB watchlist, just in case.

Film is on youtube, I must have mis-keyed the link. Edited, seems OK now.

reply

I didn't even see the first link haha. What can I say? I was only on my first coffee of the day.

Thanks :)

reply

You're welcome. I'm not completely lucid before my second cup of coffee either.

I’m surprised that no one seems yet to have mentioned 2001: A Space Odyssey. Maybe I missed the salient post, or maybe everyone else thinks it’s too obvious.

Probably OT, but when Three Dog Night’s song, Celebrate, was a hit, I always thought to myself that its refrain should be, “Cerebrate! Cerebrate! Dance to the music!”

reply

It was mentioned on page 1 and I have seen it a few times.

Don't know the song - will look on youtube for it.

2001 A Space Odyssey
Other Kubrick films
Bergman films

reply

Don't think I have ever seen any Bergman films before but there sure are a lot to go through. Any in particular that stand out?

The Best=
The Seventh Seal, 1957
Persona, 1966
Cries & Whispers, 1972
The really good=
Wild Strawberries
The Virgin Spring
Through a Glass Darkly
Scenes From a Marriage

Thanks. Will read up and see which sound the most interesting to add to the list.

reply

same here.

Any Alfred Hitchcock film.

reply

I think I have seen all his but I will check IMDB to be sure. Thanks.

Under The Skin
The Lobster
The Forbidden Room
Synecdoche, New York
Melancholia

reply

Seen them all except The Forbidden Room, which I started to watch at some point a few years ago but didn't finish it for some reason I cannot remember atm. Thanks

reply

Not a film, but Twin Peaks has sent many-a-viewer off in to cerebral realms of explanation, fer sure. I think I've seen you in the Twin Peaks discussion board, so I don't think I'm telling you anything, but the sheer amount of analysis that the series has generated shouldn't go unmentioned here.

reply

Yup. Big fan. Watched it when it was first shown. Best. TV. Show. EVER!

That one definitely is in the cerebral category and deserves an honourable mention for sure.

The Quiet Earth 1985, a very cerebral from New Zealand:

The final scene is a real mind bender.

reply

That one is on youtube. Sounds interesting. Thanks.

You're welcome. Always glad to help a fff. Please let me know what you think if you do watch it.

😎

reply

Will do.

Thanks.

Not a movie, but have you tried Benny Hill reruns?

reply

I didn't like Benny Hill when he was first around and I sure wouldn't describe him as cerebral, lol.
