Dewey

This morning I received the message I hoped that I would never receive.
It began like this "If you are reading this then I'm gone.."
After roughly a year of illness our dear Dewey has passed away.
He was courageous in dealing with it all and my admiration grew and grew.
He maintained his wicked sense of humour till the end when I forbade him to die, his reply was "You have no jurisdiction in the US"

He leaves behind his wonderful girlfriend who took the time and trouble to acquaint herself with the weird world of MovieChat to write and keep us updated when Dewey was too poorly. They were each others world and my heart goes out to her.

Dewey was a splendid person, a friend. I was his big sis, we spoke about everything. 215 pages of pms and I cannot believe I'll never hear from him again.

If you'll forgive the cheesiness I think and hope Dewey would approve of this poem...

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message 'He is Dead'.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Edited to reflect the poet's name. W.H Auden

That is terrible news. He was a good guy and will be truly missed.

Rest in peace, Mr. Dewey.

reply

Good to see you Tex.
You've been missed here.

reply

Thanks. It's nice to be back.

reply

Yes, good to see you again. I've missed you, too.

reply

Hi GE! Hope you are doing well.

I"m hangin' in there. Hasn't been a good week for me, but I'll be okay. 🙂

I think I said something similar recently, and I've been accused of being pompous and verbose, but when I woke up this morning, thinking of nothing, then suddenly remembering the impact Dewey had here, it's hard not to reflect on it and chime in a little more.
Not having grown up with Social Media, I have never expected to make friends at a place called Movie Chat. Usually I simply see an interesting topic, read something thoughtful and post my own response. Who the other members are doesn't seem to matter; it's the content, not the names of the players.
But I remember seeing the name "godewey," had no idea how to pronounce it and who and what this person was. That this person's unexpected (for me) passing, and the profound effect it has had here is very moving. I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to get to know this person more, and I'm so sorry for everyone who feels this loss so keenly.
The dead can relax. It's the rest of us who must continue to struggle.

Well said, snepts ! This comes across as very honest and sincere.

Tell me what I'm missing? Did someone die?

I refer you to the thread “Dewey” posted by Dazed. Our much beloved Dewey left us this week to go “Rest High On That Mountain”. Then read every thread you can locate about Dewey (godewey). You then will understand why we are so grieved.

Edit:Sorry, you are in the thread Dewey. Continue reading.

reply

Thank you. Sorry for your loss.

I am in SHOCK right now.

I rarely come here these days and I had no idea that someone here had passed away -- least of all Godewey.

He was the heart of soul of this board!!!! He was such a great poster here. He liked and got along with everyone.

I can't believe I'm reading that he's gone.
