Dewey

This morning I received the message I hoped that I would never receive.
It began like this "If you are reading this then I'm gone.."
After roughly a year of illness our dear Dewey has passed away.
He was courageous in dealing with it all and my admiration grew and grew.
He maintained his wicked sense of humour till the end when I forbade him to die, his reply was "You have no jurisdiction in the US"

He leaves behind his wonderful girlfriend who took the time and trouble to acquaint herself with the weird world of MovieChat to write and keep us updated when Dewey was too poorly. They were each others world and my heart goes out to her.

Dewey was a splendid person, a friend. I was his big sis, we spoke about everything. 215 pages of pms and I cannot believe I'll never hear from him again.

If you'll forgive the cheesiness I think and hope Dewey would approve of this poem...

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message 'He is Dead'.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Edited to reflect the poet's name. W.H Auden

I read this news earlier today and was so stunned and saddened that I’ve been unable to respond. Even now, it’s difficult to find the words. My tears of laughter at Dewey’s posts have turned to tears of sadness.

He was such a driving force on this site. Clever, great sense of humor, friendly, easy-going, a little racy at times, but never blatantly vulgar. A gentleman.

For newer members who may not know Dewey, here are just a few examples of his fondness for this place called MovieChat:

I believe that when we lose someone we feel close to, they still live through us and give us strength. The time we have spent with Dewey makes him a part of us. May we make him proud. Rest in Peace, dear Dewey. Godspeed. We will miss you forever.

And finally, my sincere condolences to his girlfriend. I can only imagine the pain she is dealing with right now.

(I know this song refers to losing your woman, but I'm hearing it as losing a friend, too.)

I was so sad to hear this news. He was one of my favorite posters, always funny and intelligent, and never rude or vulgar.
We are already missing him terribly. And the poem you quoted is not cheesy at all. It's of course from the excellent film "Four Weddings and a Funeral", and is so appropriate in this case.

My favorite memory of him was during a really funny conversation I kept calling him "Godeway". He never mentioned my error, and never missed a beat in the conversation. When I finally realized my error and apologized, he said "That's okay, and that's not a tear on my cheek." Hilarious, and vintage Dewey.

Thank you for being his friend Dazed, and for bringing this sad news to us. MC will never be the same again.

"MC will never be the same again."

Indeed it won't.

But we must go on.

Wow, I can hardly come to the realisation we will never see him here again. That sucks. May he rest in peace.

Go Dewey, go reach the stars and watch upon us as we keep your legacy alive.

reply

I know, it's so surreal.

reply

💔😖. I can't add much more that hasn't already been said.

Dewey you will be greatly missed. May you carry on my wayward brother.

reply

I love that, your wayward brother.
Lay your weary head to rest, don't you cry no more.

reply

Oh man!!

I didn't converse with him as much as some of you, but he was always a pleasure to have an exchange with. His loss will be felt, and he will missed.
