share6.4 average rating on rt, 61% average on metacritic. those are fairly anemic scores. not batman v superman level hatred, but definitely not the kind of scores you'd expect. particularly since there was all this chatter on twitter a few months back that the disney people were incredibly excited over this thing, thought it was among the best things they'd done.
mediocre critic scores and a long running time probably add up to this being the first mcu film i may skip, at least as far as making a trip to the theatre. if it was a little leaner, i'd probably still give it a go, but 150 minutes is too much for me.
I’m going to go and see it just to support it but the general consensus seems to be that it’s just a movie that introduces these characters and sets up further movies down the line.
It’s not going to be as fun as Black Widow or Shang-Chi but the Eternals definitely aren’t the easiest characters to adapt to a film.
It’s probably why they’ve hired Chloe Zhao because if the movie is going to be a bit of a chore then it might as well be visually stunning and well directed.
Bad reviews from the BBC and Guardian as well.
These films are usually quite well shielded from being called out as genuinely bad so this must be pretty terrible...

shareI closed the tab when I saw the word "woke" 5 words in. Right wing comic book site. That's funny.
shareI doubt Zhao was given as much autonomy as they initially suggested. Odd fit for that director if she's still anchored to the Marvel template. And I never did like that cast.
shareAnd it's almost as long as No Time To Die or Dune, damn.
shareApparently the rumours are Feige wanted to edit it down but once the director won the Oscar she was allowed final cut
share"I am [working] right now [with] Chloe [Zhao]. Chloe edits her movies and she has strong opinions. But she also wants to know everything I'm thinking, and frankly, we did the whole first cut without much input from her in terms of takes or this or that. And she just watched it. And the things that she wants to tweak, we tweak. But by and large, she has really relied on our experience and our point of view. That's why we're hired, you know, for our creativity and our experience. And sense of humor. But I think that makes the best result."
