Well it was nice knowing you all - Stupid IMDb

IMDb has really screwed up. I don't do SM so won't have a way to talk to other board users. Grrrrrr Please everyone complain to IMDb and maybe they'll change their minds.

IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb’s social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb’s editors and one another. IMDb’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).

Because IMDb’s message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they’d like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.

IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

Alas...I neither face, tweet nor tumble. No snapping either. This was my first foray into anything...never did chat rooms back in the day either. My friends are lucky I text and that is a recent thing, I'm just not tech savvy. Anyway, this is a terrible development. I've really enjoyed "talking" with you all and exchanging ideas and I will miss that, sincerely. Just wanted to say thanks now even though I'll keep coming here I til the last day. Chances are I'll forget when it is the last day, come here and go WTH!!

To those I agreed with, to those I didn't and to those who had no idea what I was talking about...thank you very much for sharing your thoughts, taking time to do so and including me in a very special group of people. I will miss you all! 🤗

What's really aggravating is IMDb isn't letting me contact anyone via PM either. Other's have contacted me but I'm not getting a contact button when I pull up someone's profile. Can't contact to get emails.

Also here's a petition to save the boards.

Do I have to sign with my real name? Not too many people IRL know about my Outlander obsession, or the other shows I also enjoy. I'd like to keep it that way.

reply

I used my IMDb handle.

reply

Signed it! I just found these message boards a couple months ago and now pop in multiple times a day!

reply

Since IMDb for some reason won't let me PM anyone, if you want to stay in contact with me PM and we can exchange email addresses.

This is a bummer! While lack of moderation can make trolls more annoying too deal with, other moderated message boards can stifle descendant from the moderators opinion. Having done both I prefer IMDB's boards.

May I suggestion keeping your IMDB names when going to these new sites posted above, so we can recognize each other.

Only on tumblr am I a different name and I don't give that one out. I'll be broughps online forever. lol

I'm Andorra everywhere, so you'll find me 

It was nice talking to y'all. I'll miss being able to do that.

Well, I really thought this had to be a very sick joke when I first read it.....just now. I check this Outlander message board many times a day, for news, thoughts, ideas, comments about the show, and the books.......I don't know any other place to go, although there is some stuff on Twitter, but very limited.

The DG Compuserv site is read-only, unless you are already a member. I found that out the hard way when I wanted to post a comment there and couldn't.....I spent a lot of time with trial and error, then phone calls, to no avail.

TO ALL OF YOU WONDERFUL, SMART, INFORMED, CULTURED AND CIVILIZED 'OUTLANDER' POSTERS (you know who you are!)........ I will terribly, terribly miss reading your voices, opinions, insights, information, comments, lessons on the film industry........just the boatloads of good stuff that all of you write. You have all made Droughtlander easier to endure.

Love, and all the best to you all. Here's hoping there is another place we'll be able to meet.

I don't get it. Aside from the trolls , I don't see why IMDB would close their forums. It is one of the main attraction of this site and a very unique one as well. Nothing else compare.

I think this has to do with blow back from the film companies and actors. We use the message boards to critique movies and shows and the negative criticism may be hurting them.

For instance, if a movie opens and we say it is terrible.... it may prevent others from going so they may have pushed to get the boards removed.

I don't think it is quite that simple... and the IMDb TPTB have posted in their statement that there seems to be only a small group of members that are following the mb and most people go on SM... the only people that are on the MB are " a small but passionate community" ! And it seems these small communities may be attracting trolls and infighting.. I don't think film companies even care what is posted here, because FB, twitter and IG are make a louder and more immediate impression ..IMO

Yeah, it was nice knowing you all guys. But I have to say the place was a cesspool of negativity. Not the Outlander boards but in general...

Thanks all for some interesting and entertaining discussions we had here. Won't be joining any group, but wish all much of luck with new groups in the making.
I think, I'll stick to the few Twitter-sites (I've been visiting) for a while and see whether 140 characters can do justice to things of interest, such as Sam, Barbour, promotional events, and Outlander. I started actively there last August, so I'll just have to see whether it has enough pulling power. Like here, my username there is Maxine, the avatar depicts the same beach.
We'll probably talk to each other here in the coming couple of weeks. In case we won't, it's been a pleasant one-and-a- half-year on this board; the only one I spent some time since my IMDb-membership, almost 11 years ago.
All the best! 😊🌷

If it wasn't for message boards I may never have watched Outlander. Broughps mentioned it in another board. Too bad.

Negativity and trolls are weak justifications with which they're throwing out the baby with the bath water. They could have started shutting down (temporarily) in phases the most negative boards if negativity and trolls were the real reasons. They could have dealt with trolls too because IP-addresses are easily retrieved, so they could have banned/blocked them.
The other options like IMDb-facebook, Twitter, and the two other ones are no alternatives for substantial discussions. I took a look at their Twitter-site, but that's really not for me, because when visiting IMDb (not a board) I'm looking for something specific. I'm not browsing like I would do in a book store. On Twitter I'm confronted with too much information I'm not looking for and not necessarily interested in. So, no information I need, and no place for a discussion either. Therefore, no option for me.

Disagreements, even passionate ones, are normal , but I think overall this board here has been very civilized. I've heard the GoT board, for example has become a complete mess though. The Downton Abbey board also is invaded by trolls and a normal discussion is not possible any more. Half of the postings there get deleted by some troll who hates the show and wants to destroy the discussions. I also heard politics has become a real porblem on the boards. Since the election in the US, people become more and more hostile with each other.

I think the only solution for these problems would have been moderators for the boards which probably means more effort and more money. Too bad they're not ready to invest in them, I'm really sad about the loss of this board and the loss of this community.

Not surprised. 

Me too.

...in fact, there are a lot of shows I would never have watched - or even heard of - if it weren't for these message boards. Because it's when the same names show up on the boards of a new show you're thinking about watching (broughps is one of them) I can say "hey, I expect that's one I'll like - the people watching it seem to have similar TV tastes to mine."

Worst. Rescue. EVER!
