predict the careers of Ridley/Boyego/Issac/Driver over next few years

Ridley - very few bit parts and supporting roles in various films until nothing. Eventually signs up for a Rey Disney+ show.

Boyego - the occasional support in various films becoming less. joins Ridley in the show

Isaac - continues movie career. Dune becomes a success spawning sequels. Also signs up for big MCU role

Driver - continues appearing in small independent movies. Eventually becomes a huge star with several big movie roles including DC.

reply

Yeah I think the only 2 who can actually act are Isaac and driver.

reply

I can predict for all of them: they act in smaller roles, retire, or fade into obscurity, just like what happened to the last people who did acting work for "Star Wars." Hollywood doesn't really like people who act in sci-fi movies/tv shows, and they tend to shy away from hiring such people for work outside of that genre.

reply

Yup. I think that's changing somewhat. But not much. Scifi actors tend to bleed over into comedy sometimes. But they never become serious drama leads.

reply

If they truly want to keep their film career going and branch out, the more ambitious and resilient actors will work hard to try and broaden their skills, but it takes a lot more work, because when they leave the sci-fi niche of showbiz, they have to start from the bottom all over again, like what happened with Natalie Portman.

reply

Harrison Ford escaped that fate, but that was a different age and he may just have been one of the lucky ones.

reply

Christopher Lee did alright. He went on to star in a lot of those Hammer Horror films.

reply

Nonsense. Let's look at just a single somewhat recent sci-fi movie

Chris Hemsworth first movie role was on Star Trek and is a n A-lister
Zachary Quinto is in a fair amount of stuff and his first movie was Star Trek.
Chris Pine (Kirk) another A-lister. Did a few things before ST, but that was his breakout role.

So, this one movie launched the careers of three hollywood mainstays. not to mention there were some established stars in the movie (Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Eric Bana)

I think this myth that sci-fi actors gets typecast comes from ToS, but Mark Hamill, despite playing one of the most iconic characters in all of cinema, was a terrible actor back then. Carrie Fisher *wanted* to step back from the limelight as she grew up in a famous family and didn't really want it anymore. Of course, Harrison Ford did go on to fame.

reply

I disagree about Hamill being a bad actor i ve seen some of his independent films post SW hes a good character actor if given the chance he could have had a better career

reply

I dont think Corvette Summer helped as well. Who knows.

reply

I never said any of them were bad actors. It's just that Tinseltown didn't give any of them a chance afterwards. There's also that whole "The character follows you for life" issue that many actors have to deal with.

reply

Uh huh. You just listed the entire group of exceptions to that rule.

Now look at the hundreds of other actors who have done work in sci-fi, who weren't that lucky. Many either haven't been seen again, or did more work in other sci-fi tv shows/movies. You almost never see them in mainstream stuff because nobody wants to hire them.

reply

Who are all of these hundreds of actors? What about Chris Pratt. Sigourney Weaver. Arnold Schwarzenegger. I actually can't think of a single Sci-Fi movie that was a big hit where the lead actors didn't go on to do other things. Except for Star Trek, which is actually a TV series anyway. Maybe you are confusing Sci-Fi with Star Trek?

Oh I forgot abou t Jeff Bridges. His career totally died after Tron.

reply

You didn't factor in the lesser-known actors.

reply

Example.

reply

The list is too long to put on here.

reply

one example.

reply

michael J.Fox, Back to the Future

reply

Most of the cast of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
Actually, the casts of any Star Trek show after TOS, to be honest (and we're talking supporting actors, not the stars).

reply

I already said Star Trek, which is primarily a TV show. Name someone not Star Trek.

reply

How about the people on "Babylon 5?" Or the people on "Wing Commander?" Don't even get me started on "Bullshit Galactica." (The 2000s one).

reply

You are talking about TV series. Most people on TV don't go on to have massive careers, and TV series have large casts anyway. I thought we were talking about movies.

reply

Take a look at everyone in the cast of each sci-fi film you've ever watched. Count how many kept on going, outside the sci-fi genre, and how many faded away to obscurity. You'll find the number to be very small.

Bet you don't even know who Ahmed Best is.

reply

I think if you look at the supporting cast of any film, you will find the same thing.

reply

But in most films, there are incidents of some supporting actors going on to become famous in other films, and you don't see that hardly at all in sci-fi. Or you often keep seeing these minor actors doing re-occurring appearances only in sci-fi stuff. It kinda paints an ugly picture of 2/3 of Hollywood when it comes to the brainier genres.

reply

It's hard to say if I remember people who I didn't remember being in a movie being in other movies that I didn't remember them in.

reply

The "lesser-known actors" are lesser-known for a reason and that can apply to any show, not just sci-fi. Walking across in the background of one scene shouldn't be a guarantee of stardom down the road.

reply

I think Isaac is gonna blow up into a huge star. Driver will keep doing what he's doing. Boyego will probably make a boxing movie or something. Ridley is done.

reply

This ^^

reply

With Daisy Ridley it will depend on what she wants to do. She is engaged to be married so if she is going to start a family that might be the end of her career or at least for a few years. Otherwise it will depend on what kind of roles she takes on and how successful the films are. Then again she is a fully trained and very good stage actor, singer and dancer so she could always go down that route as well.

Boyega I can't see too much down the track for him. Then again he has the positive discrimination thing going for him so I could be wrong.

Isaac is a competent actor with some screen presence so I imagine he will continue to find work without becoming a big star.

Driver is a bit of a mystery to me. He's not a bad actor but a strange choice for a leading man type of role. He will probably fall into the same category as Isaac.

reply

Driver is about to get his 2nd Oscar nomination, and that is on top of his work in Star Wars and Girls. He's already having a great career and has the potential to be the Harrison Ford of the group.

Isaac is already off to a good career start aside from Star Wars. He's already won a Golden Globe, and if Dune hits, then its another franchise for him.

Boyego I think will always be around, mostly popping up in supporting roles here and there, but never being a leading actor.

Ridley will probably have the hardest time breaking away from her Star Wars character, similar to how Hamill struggled. Hamill eventually found his niche as a voice actor. Perhaps she will find something like that which keeps her around.

The biggest advantage these actors have over their predecessors is that with all the streaming services now, there's plenty of opportunities for them to keep working and hit big with something.

reply

Driver's career seems to be going strong already.

Not expecting a whole lot from the rest. I imagine they'll be working actors for the rest of their lives, but not expecting a Harrison Ford like career from any of them.

reply

Ridley - Steady work in smaller scale film and TV roles.

Boyega - A handful of prominent film roles before landing a starring part in a successful premium cable/streaming series.

Isaac - Wins an Oscar (with some corny pun about his name in the acceptance speech), then quietly retires to start a chain of health smoothie shops.

Driver - Continues to take himself way too seriously and eventually burns enough bridges to be relegated to middling video releases, except when he's featured in goofy supporting roles that are actually quite enjoyable even though he despises them with a passion. Either that or sucking dick in public restrooms for two bucks a pop.

reply

all of them, with straight to Netflix movies

reply

Everybody is doing Netflix these days and its not special
