a one note, melancholic and dreary series

What I don’t understand is why Marvel thought it was a good idea to turn over a property to what clearly is an agenda filled few people that does nothing but taint the underbelly of the MCU.

Jessica Jones is a character in the books that certainly has flaws and issues but to take the basic elements of established Marvel characters and add a pro-homosexual lifestyle choice agenda, a pro-abortion agenda, deviant and emotionless sexual escapades among other dreary attributes is baffling and disappointing to say the least. The showrunner here clearly couldn’t wait to stamp a Marvel property with her warped agenda and it’s sad that Marvel let her do so.

What results is a one note and melancholic series that certainly isn’t bad but it comes across shallow and delivers nothing but a depressing walk through the lives of sick individuals. The struggle isn’t fascinating and the story arcs certainly aren’t complex or even very interesting. What’s delivered is a series that makes you feel dirty as you watch it and is very low in entertainment value. That may be an “artistic” choice but it’s not a good one when the MCU is on such a wonderful roll. This series falls so far below Daredevil that it’s not even debatable. That showrunner certainly kept things gritty but stayed true to Marvel established parameters and offered many notes and true character depth. While it may not be entirely fair to call Jessica Jones a thumbs down failure (some things work and the cast is great) it certainly loses credibility when every episode is used to practically promote a warped agenda or to beat down the viewer in some way.

Abortion and homosexuality is not sick.

I agree about Homosexuality. But Abortion can be avoided. Unless you are raped. Other than that just plan smarter.

Who gives a f_ck about abortion. STFU with that sh_t.

Honestly, homosexuality is as much of a choice but if that's the choice they make then it is an exercise in free will.

reply

They're both sick Mr. SJW.

I'm 9 episodes in and I will ride it out to the end but as a Marvel fan, I've been disappointed to say the least. It's probably teetering on a 5/10 rating right now from me with 4 still to watch. (For all the reasons mentioned above)

This is by far the lowest rated and least enjoyed thing from the MCU to date. Even the early episodes that were average from Agents of SHIELD season one are better than this morose crap.

reply

...morose...

Perfect adjective.
The comic Alias was about recovery.
This show forgot that.
This is the show where "Hope" (get it?) commits suicide! WTF?

reply

"This is by far the lowest rated and least enjoyed thing from the MCU to date."

I hope your are talking for yourself. It is not.

"The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 93% approval rating with an average rating of 8.1/10 based on 54 reviews."

I don't know how many people watched the show. I hope a lot. This was the best thing Marvel ever produced. If you read these boards, the main complaints are about interracial sex, homosexuality and ridiculous things like that that would only matter to very religious nuts. A lot of people have legitimate complaints, I am sure. But then those people are very quiet compared to those who criticize Jessica Jones for the values depicted in the show and not the show itself.

Also, I dare you to search "top shows 2015" in Google. I swear, you will find Jessica Jones in almost half of them.

Now, if you didn't like the show, fair enough. But then don't talk on everybody's behalf by saying it's the least enjoyed show, it just isn't. The ratings, reviews, whathever, are there to prove it.

reply

3 lesbians and (i honestly don't ferment the abortion part) is pretty tame compared to the numbers in real life. Also chill the *beep* out

reply

Typo ferment is meant to be remember

reply

No one liked this crap, however.

reply

I liked it.

reply

It's a feminist show, it's a new thing these days SJW bloggers getting funding from UN and all these female CEOs congratulating eachother as if they have achieved something.

reply

It would be just as possible for someone to look at the show and claim that it was anti-gay and anti-abortion.

The main same sex relationship is the love triangle between Hogarth, Pam and Wendy. That begins with adultery, moves into bitter acrimony and legal fighting and ends with violence and death. The best that can be said is that gay and straight relationships are both portrayed in an equally bad light.

Hope's abortion did not prevent her from remaining extremely traumatised by the physical and mental rape she suffered at Kilgrave's hands, and even worse the fact that the foetal tissue was procured for experimentaion purposes and resulted in Kilgrave becoming even more powerful could be said to carry an anti abortion message, if you were inclined to look for one.

reply

I so agree. But then people who don't like homosexuality will see pro-gay messages everywhere. Oh whatever.

reply

I didn't like Jessica at all and all of the supporting cast was shallow and some mentally unbalanced like Jeri Hogarth. How is that entertaining at all?

reply

Ummm... Marvel was one of the first comic books to have openly gay characters, and to use their stories to talk about propaganda, bigotry and hatred. I think you missed something, dude.

Krysten Ritter was great but the show really delivered nothing but piss poor writing.

I don't care about the gay stuff or abortion stuff. But this show is hell-a boring to say the least.
It needs stronger subplots or more micro-villains. Let her stop some thieves in an alley.
Daredevil had mafia, crooked cops, kingdpin and thugs. The odds were really stacked. Then we get this lifetime bullsh!t.

reply

It needs stronger subplots

Yes!

reply

It needed stronger EVERYTHING, especially subplots.

reply

Have to agree... hated this and still do.

reply

I dunno, personally I liked that J.J. had a different take. Daredevil was in no way a bad show but despite the episode with Stick it was pretty standard stuff for me. I can see that many fans like it for that because they like it more "classic".

reply

It is not a terrible series but a little depressing.

reply

Agreed. I have no problem with the shows having different angles or whatever but it was a bit jarring for me to go from all the a$$kicking in DD to a show about a woman with super powers who uses more often to break doors and sh!t than bad guys.

I'm a fan of the freak of the week troupe which has worked well for shows like Smallville and Supernatural, so I TOTALLY agree with your micro-villain idea. The occasional bad guy to have no purpose other than to further establish her powers would've definitely livened things up a bit.

A boat that floats on water can also sink in it.

reply

Does anyone really ever wish to re-watch something like this? Honestly? Even if you liked it for some reason, what is worth watching it more than once?

reply

I'd re-watch it, sure.

People are different. They have different tastes. I don't expect you to like the same things as me. Why would I?

reply

I wouldn't and won't.

Jessica Jones was a crap series, period. They ran in the WRONG direction with this show and kept on running.

I was really very shocked by some of the issues they tried to tackle in this show. Especially the abortion. For such a heavy issue, it was brought up and resolved within an episode, and I guess it was supposed to make us feel more sorry for Hope's situation? If that was their goal, it didn't work. She was still an ungrateful character that didn't have any redeeming qualities.
I also had high hopes for the fact that they would be dealing with PTSD and abusive relationships, however I feel like they didn't really deal with it at all. Kilgrave represents the serial killers, the 2% of insane people in the world. Most abusers are seemingly nice, quite people who gradually take away a person's control.
Kilgrave was just an obnoxious *beep* on steroids. They tried to pack in far too many heavy issues-feminism, abortion, homosexuality, PTSD, depression, drug addiction, abuse, etc, without including them enough to do them any real justice. I feel like if this show didn't have any of those things included in it, people wouldn't be paying it any attention.
They simply added in a ton of social issues and made statements about them in order to get people talking about it more and garner favorable reviews, even though the show is really quite terrible.

reply

You hit the nail on the head with this post!
What so incredibly frustrating is there was an ABSOLUTELY GREAT STORY they could've and indeed they started to tell but seemingly put aside and just began clumsily pressing social and wedge issues buttons.
I suspect the show was rushed and short changed.
Daredevil was a mega hit and Melissa Rosenberg was asked if she could deliver this year under a too small budget and she said yes without enough consideration.
The script was a brainstorm/test pilot
It would be wonderful to have this rewritten and re-shot with your observation noted.
