Seriously, they should have addressed that. Maybe at least include that she had condoms with her just in case. I can't imagine a high school teenager that was not previously sexually active knowing enough about ovulation cycles to know when it was safe and not safe.

Keep in mind that birth control stays in your system for a long time. Even though she may have run out of pills or extent of the shot the drug would have remained in her system for up to a year.
Source: I used to take birth control pills, went off of them and was actively trying to get pregnant with my husband. After a several months of nothing I spoke to my doctor who told me that the hormone stays in your system for a year after you stop taking it and that was lessening my chances for conceiving. 14 months after I was off the pill I finally got pregnant.
If you research the Depo shot you'll find that it's protection lasts 3 months but even if you stop getting the shot it may still take months before your body is capable of conceiving again.
I figure she was on the shot or the pill before she went on the trip. They were there about 3 months so she knows she's still protected by the shot which is why she's so sure she's not. She seems like the kind of person who would have researched this obsessively before choosing a method. There's also the stress they're under, the malnutrition, etc. All these things combined make her extremely unlikely to conceive.
I agree the vomiting scene was awkward as was the going through her clothes and the poofy prom dress. It seems like they left in the scenes leading up to it then abandoned the story line due to time. The whole last part of the movie after they're rescued is kind of slapdash.

shareJust because she wasn't previously sexually active doesn't mean she wasn't on birth control. My teenager daughter started taking the pill at 15 then at the beginning of this year after she turned 18 she started taking the Depo shot and is just now sexually active (I know because she told me the day after it happened and had lots of questions).

shareBecause getting pregnant is much less probable than people actually realize. Most of the time, only one ovum is released during ovulation. Only 1% of the sperm actually make it passed the cervix and into the uterus. Also, timing has to be just right so that those sperm can travel past the cervix, through the uterus, and into the Fallopian tube, where it fuses with the ovum (fertilization) to form a zygote. Plus even at the most fertile stage of the menstrual cycle, there is still only a 25% chance of fertilization occurring. Moreover, fertilization needs to take place at a fairly specific location in the Fallopian tube; fertilization too early or too late can prevent the zygote from implanting into the endometrial wall of the uterus. More than 50% of zygotes are lost prior to implantation and 30-35% of the implanted zygotes do not survive until the mother's first missed menstrual period.
Most importantly though, when you have a nutritional deficit, the first thing your body does (mainly females) is shut down its ability to reproduce. Your body isn't going to waste its energy producing gametes and trying to sustain a fetus if you can't sustain yourself by meeting the necessary daily caloric intake (this is why women with anorexia or bulimia have irregular, erratic, or non-existent menstrual cycles). There is no point in trying to create new life if the mother won't survive long enough to birth the child. If you are trapped on an island where you are only eating bananas, you aren't going to maintain a regular period.
This is a far fetched idea but maybe just maybe she hasn't gotten her period yet. While I know most girls these days do get there periods early but there are still a rare few that don't get it till they are 17 if not 18. I doubt this is the case but it would also explain why she didn't have hair on her legs or underarms.

I believe she was pregnant. It appeared she was throwing out her old clothes and wearing buggier ones. 3 mos pregnant does not show much plus she may not have gotten pregnant right away.

I agree. How could she not be pregnant? The vomiting, etc? I thought at first I had missed something but then I thought it was sucky editing.

shareOK, first, read Saramacg09's post. They make some good points, especially about malnutrition and the body going into survival mode. However, when discussing averages, lets consider that we are talking about a sixteen or seventeen year old woman and the averages probably include all women up to menopause. Basically, a young woman is generally more likely to get pregnant easily.
Now, I'd like to address some of these other remarks: As for no period and no hair on legs or underarms. I think it's safe to assume they just didn't want to deal with these issues, and didn't want hairy armpits turning us off. As for the guy (I don't meant the 22 year old actor, but his character)it is normal for a sixteen or seventeen year old guy not to have much facial hair.
About the cravings, I think it would be normal to crave real tooth paste and food when stuck without it so long.
About the pill; many women including teens, are prescribed the pill not as birth control, but to help regulate their cycle. So that could have been an option, but the writers didn't mention it, and she wouldn't likely have three months supply anyway, so I think we can rule that out.
And the clothes; I just took that as a sign that maybe she wasn't as concerned with wearing all the latest fashions after all she had been through.
Now the vomiting, that I still can't make sense out of. Sure, she could be vomiting for reasons other than pregnancy, but why did they have the scene then? Overall, I feel it was not realistic to have it the way it was and her not get pregnant. Now some of you suspect a sequel, and that is about the only reason I can think of to explain how it was played out. Maybe the writers weren't crazy after all. It would make perfect sense for her to not tell Dean until she felt sure he truly wanted to be with her. Who wants a man who feels trapped by an unplanned pregnancy? Now, will she have the baby and still go to Princeton?
@rlslawn-Regarding the theory of a sequel-I wonder if you might be on to something.I agree,there are many reasons a woman could vomit besides pregnancy-case in point,I,myself have vomited many times when I wasn't pregnant,and on the flip side,I didn't vomit once when I was pregnant-lol!! But I agree,if she wasn't pregnant,there was absolutely no need to have that scene in the movie,unless,like you said,the writers were foreshadowing for a possible sequel. I'm hoping that the writers and producers will see that there is a demand for a sequel,and bring one to us in the next year or two-but only if Indiana and Brenton return-they are Emma and Dean!! :-)
