U.S. Remake is coming!!!

http://asiapacificarts.usc.edu/article@apa?hollywood_remake_of_the_rai d_in_the_works_17418.aspx

The Indonesian producers are apparently going to be involved, as well as the original fight choreographers but this is Hollywood.

Who do you guys think they will cast as the SWAT team members and then the villain?

I have a feeling that Hollywood might just cast someone like Collin Farrell, Vin Diesel,Channing Tatum, or Tyrese Gibson. Then they would add Cung Le and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson as the villains. I would hope they would add some Hong Kong Action stars like Donnie Yen but chances of that are probably slim.

the trailer is already out, it's called Dredd.

Be fair, Dredd was in production first, after all. Just a bad coincidence, really.

(Although, speaking even as a fan of the Judge Dredd comics, it is unlikely that Dredd will be as awesome as The Raid. I think it'll be awesome in its own right, at least. And who knows, if we're lucky, the similarity might actually stop US producers from doing a remake. :P)

I think Dredd will stall any possible remake of The Raid. Although i'm not buying this "it's coincidence" thing, it may be, but its far more likely Evans read the Peach Trees script that was around a long time before The Raid turned up and "borrowed" plot elements from it. The similarities are just too great.Evans was also suspiciously quick to tweet how much he liked Dredd. Just not buying it.

reply

I take it you didn't know Evans is a hardcore movie-lover?? And that his followers are ALL The Raid's fans who will of course update him with any kind of information (in hope of getting an RT, of course) He LOVES movies and always crazy about them! And Dredd is nothing like The Raid! They both are great in their own strength and weaknesses

"Evans read the Peach Trees script" how? he's been in Indonesia for quite a while... and he's "nobody anyone knows" yet. How come would he have access to read the script?

reply

Well, the script has been leaked onto the internet since July 2010 as "Peach Trees", so it's a lot easier to access than you might think.

Regardless, I love the Raid, and I'm also really hoping I'll love Dredd, too!

Just by looking at the trailer it looks like 'DREDD' is the remake...

reply

But Dredd was filmed first, so that's more of a...pre-make?

With a bit of the Matrix thrown in and a confirmed hard R rating. Looking forward to it.

The Raid American Remake can't be half as good as the original was. No way.

Hey there, somebody else said what I was thinking. Nice. I just made a post on the Dredd board pointing this out. It was a shot for shot remake of the first 30 minutes of the film. Give me a break. What a BS rip off of a movie.

reply

Actually, it's been well documented that Dredd was in production BEFORE The Raid. I'm actually quite surprised so many people believe that Dredd ripped off the Raid, considering it was barely released over a year ago. Do people REALLY believe that it takes less than a year to script, cast, produce and more importantly, do a ton of CGI for even a medium budget film like Dredd?

Dredd was written in 2008, and the script leaked online in 2010. I got a copy of it back then. Gareth Evans shut down a previous movie he was developing a few months later and suddenly his new movie was the Raid.

Didn't you stop to think: "Boy, it takes awhile to make a movie. How can a ripoff come out within a few months of the movie it is ripping off if its really a ripoff?" I guess its too much to ask that you did some research to figure this out yourself.

Dredd was based on David Carradine in Death Race 2000 & Dirty harry. Nice review though but something needs clearing up:

Here’s a Dredd / Raid Timeline –

2007/2008 Alex garland writes first drafts of Dredd ‘Peach Trees’ screenplay.

12/2008: Alex Garland named Dredd screenwriter.

09/2009: Artist, Mark ‘Jock” Simpson confirms he has been creating visuals off of Garland’s Dredd script.

05/2010: Dredd creator, John Wagner, confirms Dredd script is written.

07/2010: Version 8 of Dredd script is LEAKED online.

07/2010: Late July, Todd Brown confirms working with Gareth Evans on Berandal.

08/2010: Somewhere between Aug. ’10 & Nov. ’10, Gareth Evans shelves the film Berandal due to budget and begins work on The Raid script.

08/2010: Pre-production on Dredd begins.

11/2010: Pre-production on Raid begins.

11/2010: Dredd begins filming, finishes in Feb.’11 and enters a year of post-production.

03/2011: Raid begins filming (unsure of finish date).

Note: Evans has said he found out about the Dredd script during Raid post-production and rushed the release of Raid to get it out first.

Typical, they rob someone elses idea and most likely ruin it. No way will a US remake be as good as the original, I liked this so much because its different to how it would have been made in the US

Damn.
