Did not deserve best picture

Is a well written and acted film with a great social statement, but simply cannot match the stylistic mastery and beautiful/brutal story of The Revenant.

Michael Keaton had trouble with the Boston accent. Sometimes he had one, sometimes he didn't.

IMO the Revenant is little more than one usual spotless action movie like many others, Mad Max was better but I understand for a broader audience Spotlight might touch more people.

But Birdman did, and The King's speech did.

I think if they allowed slapping some sense into people we would start getting better Oscar nominations...

Oskars problem with Eli is not her ambiguous gender, but her ambiguous humanity.

Its all politics.

Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

Your comment whilst I didn't agree I thought was a fair enough statement until this part

the stylistic mastery and beautiful/brutal story of The Revenant

Actually just the "beautiful" part is what I really have to argue. Yeah the cinematography of The Revenant was quite outstanding, but as for story it seemed like another glorification of macho American history with the Indian aspect thrown in to allow sympathy for the main character, it was really just an action flick with an I.Q., it wasn't even DiCaprio's best performance by a fair way!

I found Spotlight an excellent film all round, it served its purpose of telling a story, not just of the atrocities of the Catholic church's actions over the years but of the people who wrote the story and how they did it. It didn't over-sensationalise anything and all of the actors put in great performances without over-doing it. This was the best film I've seen in a few years, let alone 2015.

Star Wars is like pizza, even when it's bad it's still pretty good.

Completely Agreed

the revenant was *beep*

The Revenant is overrated (and so is the director), its a visual masterpiece but it drags adn is classic revenge story. Spotlight is probably the best movie of the last 3 to 5 years. Amazingly crafted, great acting, with a powerful message (which I didn't see as anti-catholic, but anti-institutional). I think the most important point was the ex-priest who was still catholic, but didn't believe in the organized aspect of religion.

It is not overrated. Spotlight is. And the fact that you are calling The Revenant both a visual masterpiece and an overrated film proves you are an ignorant American.

reply

Canadian. The Revenant is visually stunning, but drags and is a cliched revenge film with multiple instances of overacting.
