Better than Rocky

In my eyes, Rocky is boring, and Sylvester Stallone is not nearly the actor Jake Gylenhall is, to me this movie is 100x better

Ok... you are a probably someone who was born after 1990. Sylvester Stallone wrote these stories for Rocky. And on top of that he was from Philly. Raging Bull also another classic fight movie. Southpaw is new. New actor, old story.
Rocky got it right. Showing that a man can go far in the world if he just puts his head down and plows forward.

The fight scenes in SOUTHPAW are believable and excellently filmed. Jake G acted well and looked great. Its a feel good movie and, at the end you'll feel good.

Raging Bull and Rocky were the forerunners and are timeless Classics. "Rocky" is part of the English language and meant for the classic, never-say-die underdog in everyday life.

Can Southpaw can stand the test of time like the other two? I doubt it.

I liked Southpaw a lot but I have to disagree with you OP. I enjoy revisiting Rocks 1-4 all the time but this one isn't something I'll watch again unless someone asks me too.

This movie isn't even as good as that steaming pile Rocky 5. This movie is classic Sutter, clearly he doesn't research his material and just writes nonsense.

Stallone was nominated for an Oscar for his acting in Rocky I.

Jake won't be, as he wasn't even nominated for NightCrawler, which was a much superior performance to what he did in this film.

Actually, Stallone WAS nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Ironic that you tell someone to "Search for facts before you write something" when you didn't even fact-check yourself, and not only that, called someone out for something they got right in the first place.

And by "ironic" I mean ... douchey.

reply

I wouldn't say 100x better, but I definitely agree that this film is superior to Rocky! It made me feel so much more (to the point where I was chanting "Come on, Billy" during the finale).

A lot of newer movies are better than older movies. The older movies just hold a certain nostalgia and were the pinnacle of cinema back then. The Fighter, Southpaw, Warrior and even Undisputed 1 & 2 were better made movies. They had better technical fighting and acting than anything Rocky could deliver. Rocky will however always be the best known and well regarded.

Take Alien for example as a classic in everyone's eyes. There have been many low budget horror B movies that I have seen in the past couple years that are 'better' than Alien. Alien broke all the ground and set the tone. Ridley Scott made Prometheus to the same tone and was seen as cliche and predictable. I guess it may be just me, but, Ray Stevenson's B-movie Outpost just blows away most big budget movies.

Gyllenhaal was great, but I don't think this film had overall better acting than Rocky...definitely much better fights though.
