Why does this film get good ratings?

Pacific Rim was BAD just BAD. The plot-line was overly predictable. The acting was nothing special.

I saw it in the cinema but I was actually bored. Boohoo so his brother died in a war. *beep* happens grow up. Lots of people die in wars. If everyone who lost someone in a war went into hiding well it would be over pretty quickly. Also the second the "hot female" came into picture it was obvious what would happen.

You were bored? Boohoo so you were bored. *beep* happens grow up. Lots of people get bored by movies. If everyone who got bored by a movie thought their opinion was the only one that mattered it would be over pretty quickly. Also why do you think anyone gives a *beep* about your opinion?

People like me love it, maybe you're just not in touch with your inner child?

Yes yes, I know, I'm immature.

I'm the one having fun though.

You're not alone, I loved the movie. The middle part is slow and they could have done with more action and day scenes, but the battle in Hong Kong and near the rift were both totally worth the wait. Gypsy head butting one of the Kaiju was simply awesome along with the hitting the other Kaiju with a ship. The movie was just a fun ride, it's a shame not more people could enjoy it for what it is.

well I can understand that this sort of movie with giant robot machines fighting giant monsters is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's the type of movie that pays homage to the Japanese Tokusatsu & Kaiju/Mecha genre that has been in existence for many decades, it's a popular genre used in many Japanese shows like Ultraman, Super Sentai, Godzilla and Gamera etc and used in many animes too. So I think Pacific Rim would probably appeal to mostly anime fans or people who are familiar with this type of Tokusatsu and Kaiju/Mecha genre or like the Godzilla movies.

Since I'm such a big otaku and grew up watching alot of animes and Tokusatsu shows, I love this movie and I'm glad that Hollywood has finally made a movie that pays homage to this popular Japanese genre I love the spectacles and special effects, the storyline though not great but is not bad either, and I love many of the characters in the movie, I also saw good chemistry between many of the characters. The only drawback I have with this movie is that there wasn't enough focus on the character development, there was just too much focus on the CGI and special effects, which were great btw, but I just wish they had focused more on the character development...but I do like Mako's development in the movie though. Even though Raleigh was our main lead character, the story is told from his POV, but I feel like Mako is our real protagonist, her story ties many of the characters together & plays a bigger part to the main story I think.

I'm not fully excusing the plot or characters - I agree they could have been far better, but ultimately people go see giant monster movies to see: Giant Monsters, and on that front I think this had some awesome monster/robot fights and so I just FF through most of the people stuff, just like I always did back in the day with "Godzilla" flicks.

Obviously not everyone is into the whole giant monster thing, so if not all that would leave one with is the characters, which again, I agree, were very sub par. But then again, there were a few decent moments with the people, they had potential.

I agree, this is mainly just a popcorn action flick made for entertainment, it's not suppose to be taken seriously...there were some human depth to the story and some character development for a few of the characters, but it's still mainly a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters. I think the problem is that some people take this movie too seriously and assume they are suppose to take it seriously, but it's not, Pacific Rim is mainly just a popcorn movie made purely for entertainment and fun, and it's a good and enjoyable movie for what it is.

I agree with the OP.

Bad film.

I gave it a 4. I was generous.

reply

do you really think this movie is "bad" or do you just take it too seriously?

reply

Yes I do think it was bad. I do not have a problem with suspending disbelief to watch a movie. A good movie makes me want to do that.

Predictable plot.

Awful dialogue.

Wooden acting. The two scientists were the worst.

I just couldn't "care" about any of the characters. None of them moved me at all.

CGI and fight sequences were very good though.

I actually like action movies. I like B-grade type movies too such as Independence Day. Raiders of the Lost Ark. Star Wars. Guardians of the Galaxy. All good fun movies. Pacific Rim was not. It was awful.

fair enough, I was just curious...we will just have to agree to disagree then. I personally love this movie alot, sure it has its flaws but every movie has flaws. I will admit that the dialogue could've been written better and the characters could've been fleshed out more too, they focused too much on all the special effects and not enough on character development, I do agree with that, but I still really like alot of the characters and alot of them made me care, Mako's story in particular really touched me, she's my favorite character. The main overarching story though wasn't too great but it was still interesting enough to keep me watching, and of course all the CGI and special effects were spectacular. As for the acting, it really wasn't bad at all IMO, and believe me I have seen some REALLY terrible acting, and the acting in Pacific Rim wasn't even nearly as bad as I've seen...wasn't great, but wasn't bad or wooden either, I thought all the actors did a good job with what they were given, they were convincing in their roles, they all were IMO.

You are certainly entitled to your own opinion of course, but with a solid 7 rating from nearly 373,000 votes on IMDb and a good 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it looks like the people who think this movie is "awful" are only in the minority.

I agree with you this movie is awesome!
Waaay better than Godzilla which was absolute crap, yet everyone praises it as the best kaiju/monster movie when is far worst dialogues, scripting and acting. Not to mention the action of the fattas godzilla against some mating butterflies. That movie was beyond ridiculous!
I find very ironic everyone criticizes the movie for it's dialogues and caracter development all of a suddenly knowing it's a scifi action movies. But let thise who talk *beep* about episode 7 burn in hell. I mean really?! A recycled story, bland acting and zero caracter development. But OMFG don't you dare insult SW. Seriously everyone who hates this movie just *beep* off! Its scifi it doesn't need to be realistic, it doesn't need great acting, it doesn't need excelent dialogues. Its just a fun entertaining, eye opening saturday night evening for action thats all.
Ive seen much worse films in recent years let's not even mention where Batman vs Superman stands. And this is waaaay better!

The scientists were wooden? As someone who has grown up in a family of scientists, I can tell you that statement is completely incorrect. They very much felt like scientists, and I actually rather enjoyed them as supporting characters.

i tried to watch this garbage twice now, and cant pass the 28:09 mark tonight, maybe i had too many yeygers. lol.
just crap, *beep* anyone who thought this was a good idea!

neon genisysis evongalion

Did you have a stroke whilst writing this?

Also, you're an idiot if you think Eva, circa 1995, predates mecha/toku/kaiju as a genre, which goes all the way back to the 1950s. I get it that it's baby's first mecha and all, but just because it's the first and/or only mecha you people have seen, doesn't mean that mecha as a genre didn't exist before Eva.
