Why does this film get good ratings?

Pacific Rim was BAD just BAD. The plot-line was overly predictable. The acting was nothing special.

I saw it in the cinema but I was actually bored. Boohoo so his brother died in a war. *beep* happens grow up. Lots of people die in wars. If everyone who lost someone in a war went into hiding well it would be over pretty quickly. Also the second the "hot female" came into picture it was obvious what would happen.

I love how you act all smug and yet did not understand why he was so traumatized by this. Yet you rant about how predictable everything was.

...but they hung him anyway.
Hanged, Ami. Your father was not a tapestry.

It's certainly not a great movie, for me it was worth a watch as a nonsensical action and visual feast. It entertained me enough for one viewing, but I'd never watch it again though.

It certainly was fairly predictable but for mindless action it was ok.

However what this movie really is... a demo disc through and through for home cinema. With its use of colour and blacks, it's a good movie to throw a few scenes on after calibrating your TV.

Sounds like the plot of a lot of Japanese anime.
I watched this while reading a book.
I rated it a 5.

Because it's a great movie . . . It's certainly far superior than michael bay Transformers and TMNT movies. It's also so much better than the boring Godzilla 2014 that showcase Godzilla in such a boring and obnoxious way. Also, contrary for what you said, "the hot female" go different way that mostly "Hollywood" movies do. Mako become more of a close friend and partner, the best "buddy".
