Excellent movie that caters to adult sensibilities

Someone else said it best, "Superhero movies are no longer merely visual pyrotechnics for the prepubescent, popcorn-munching masses. They are films driven by questions about character and motivation, and a little existential angst." The Wolverine delivers all this and we can now add another fine film to the comic adaptation achieves right next to the best of the Iron Man and Spider-Man movies.

The Wolverine is a well-written film with superb performances all around. The script is admirable and develops the character in interesting ways, continuing and exploring themes that adults can appreciate. Maybe some of the minor backlash we see here is from those who wanted all childish ninja action? Isn't that why they are re-making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? My advice, quit bitching about a great film like this one and simply wait for that to hit theatres.

Yeah, I agree; this film seemed more targeted to kids than adults. Outside of the action and special effects, I found the entire plot to be too predictable. Also, I have to disagree with the OP; there are no deeper questions presented in this film, it's just another damsel in distress film that appeals to men's masculine need to rescue women.

There were women in this film but even Mariko could hardly be called a damsel in distress. She needed help but she was the one that saved Logan TWICE at the end. Yuriko kicked all kinds of ass all the way through. Nothing predictable to me at any point.

This movie thought out of the box right from the start. That is so refreshing and just what the franchise needed at this time.

It's the best X-Men movie since X2. The Wolverine is more character driven and unlike X3 or X-Men Origins has an actual story that makes sense. It shows Logan hitting an all time low after Jean's death. By this point, he's becomes so distraught from losing his friends and loved ones especially Jean Grey that he secludes himself from the world and only by the events of this movie does he come to terms with himself, forgives himself and moves on. Now that's a story and they did a pretty dam good job at that. There's plenty of action but it's more grounded and reality based and doesn't get too outlandish. This is more of mature and adult oriented comic book movie than the ones coming out lately.

If you thought there were no deeper concepts or depth to the plot then you are indeed watching as if a child.

It was bound to happen. A movie this good always gets blowback.

Reading some of the critiques, it's easy to see it is indeed children who didn't like the film. At least, I pray those rambling nonsensical threads are written by children. I hope those aren't voting age adults with some sort of brain damage.

reply

I see no critiques of merit at all. Fresh with most critics for a reason methinks.

I saw this movie again today before it leaves theaters for good. I'm so glad that I did.

The Wolverine really isn't a kids movie at all. Angst, subtitles and a lot of slashing. I just love the extended unrated version as well. It's still my favorite film released during the summer months but it's not for small children.

Ever since X2 this genre has been one to be proud of when they take it seriously and don't try and change to much to fill what Hollywood thinks is "comic booky"... (man, I hate that term.)

reply

What nonsense. Anyone who thinks there was anything "adult" about this film suffers from stunted intellectual or emotional growth. I'll give you teenage at best.

$10 says wrlord2001 himself is not old enough to drink.

reply

I'll take your money, genius. I've reading Wolverine since he was created.

This is exactly why most have come out praising this film. It's a "big boy" movie released among CG clusterflubs.

I hope Days of Future Past takes the same tone as this with maybe a bit more humor in the past.
