Excellent movie that caters to adult sensibilities

Someone else said it best, "Superhero movies are no longer merely visual pyrotechnics for the prepubescent, popcorn-munching masses. They are films driven by questions about character and motivation, and a little existential angst." The Wolverine delivers all this and we can now add another fine film to the comic adaptation achieves right next to the best of the Iron Man and Spider-Man movies.

The Wolverine is a well-written film with superb performances all around. The script is admirable and develops the character in interesting ways, continuing and exploring themes that adults can appreciate. Maybe some of the minor backlash we see here is from those who wanted all childish ninja action? Isn't that why they are re-making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? My advice, quit bitching about a great film like this one and simply wait for that to hit theatres.

reply

Agreed. Although I did think the film was a little boring. Not because of lack of action. I just didn't care that much about the other characters. I did enjoy this movie. It is 100 times better than Origins.

I found nothing to be boring at all. Good cinema does that. This movie was so well written that even editing out the final action scene it still would be in "best of the year" contention.

The movie we have been waiting for indeed.

Why didn't Fox run more ads after release? Quote all the critics that raved about this film. It's like they moved on too quick.

reply

Slant Magazine says that this may be the year's best superhero movie because, for a sufficient amount of time, it doesn't feel like a superhero movie at all. While true, it DOES feel like a good comic book. They took what works from the books (intelligent grit, grounded fantasical elements and a flawed, textured anti-hero) and made it sing in this film.

reply

This is right. This movie wasn't really a superhero movie in the traditional sense. More and more adults grew up reading comic books and know that they deliver depth. The old stereotypes are starting to die because of films like this one. It puts a spotlight on comic book properties. Yes, comic books and adventure films CAN deliver deep character pieces.

reply

Those stereotypes are the only thingthat bothers most fans. You'd think that after Iron Man and Avengers they "kiddie" concept would be out the window.

reply

No children under the age of ten should see this film. It's damn good but not for the kiddies.

reply

Now THIS is a true post. The Wolverine is quite intelligent for an adventure/fantasy.

reply

Film critic Christy Lemiere just said the same thing.

IMO, there was too dang much ninja action in this movie. Action Movie Overload is a thing, and I suffered from it. I want my characters to make actual decisions, not be swept along by events.

I liked it. I didn't love it. I wanted to love it. It was merely okay and it should have been great.

the ending was juvenile

The ending is superb. Only those of limited intellect would fail to see that but I guess that's why we're talking about it here.

"HULK SMASH!" is considered intelligent dialogue by child like adults. this film was a sloppy, cliche aimed at mewing neck beards who are just happy the mainstream is finally acknowledging their existence. the dialogue and story are a joke. if this is considered a good film by comic book standard, it's no wonder the genre is looked down upon. you settle for tripe like this and convince yourself it's citizen *beep* cane. there are several better examples of comic book story telling and they all had a script writer who didn't write like a ten year old fanboi. they actual took pride in the story and didn't treat the audience like they were children. lazy, lazy film.

reply

Wow, letterbocks, you really over-react in your post. I know the guy you responded to acted like an elitist douche, but your doing the same thing doesn't make you come off any better. if the movie is not to your liking, that is fine, but it is by no means the result of someone who "writes like a ten year old fanboi" nor does it treat the audience "like they are children". Come down off your high horse and stop acting like a bitter, over-reactionary fanboi who didn't get his way. You have no pedestal here.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

A lot of these posts sound really plasticky and contrived. I rarely see weird reviews like these on the net, and I spend WAY TOO MUCH time on the net.

reply

Yet it doesn't make it any less true. Getting a point across in a title thread it hard because most people don't read past that. This movie is made for grown ups and appreciated by grown ups.

Let's never forget this gem.
