shareMarty Still got a standing ovation though
shareWhile it wasn’t my favourite, it’s hard to see a genuinely good film stand out as the only one of the nine Best Picture nominees to leave empty-handed.
Problem is, the only category where (IMO) it was the best was Supporting Actor (Pesci) and Pitt has that locked up months ago. It was a fine achievement overall but there was strong competition.
I think The Irishman would very likely have performed better if it had been released the previous year.
I agree.
It was a Very Strong year this year, any other year in the last decade it would have won at least a few Oscars, and could have swept the board last year.
The Irishman is ten times better than ruddy Green Book, or that Sexy Fish story.
What was so strong this year? 1917 and Parasite were better than Green Book but The Irishman was still a far better film than any of the competition.
shareParasite was the best by a quite a distance IMO - it’s not often I say this but I do feel the best film won this year. The Irishman is very good but Scorsese has done better - his bar is pretty high - and I feel that several of the other nominees this year were just as memorable.
I would have preferred Pesci over Pitt and screenplay over Jojo (although Little Women would have been equally deserving there), but I really feel that the competition in other categories was just too strong.
At least Scorsese got his standing ovation when Bong paid tribute to him - a wonderful moment.
Yeah that was heartwarming. Do you think Goodfellas was his best? What is so great about Parasite?
shareTaxi Driver/Raging Bull/The King of Comedy/The Last Temptation of Christ are my favourites. I prefer The Irishman to Goodfellas.
I saw Parasite last July in a packed cinema and it is just the best experience I have had with an audience in several years. Bouncing between genres, laugh out loud funny, gasp-inducing if you do not know what is coming. The cast gels beautifully. It was fresh off its Palme d’Or win when I saw it but it never occurred to me it could go this far. Top five of the decade IMO.
I liked Colour of Money a little more than The Irishman. It was a little more dynamic and didnt suffer to the nostalgia pandering when using the older actors.
Newman didn't seem tired in a demanding role, De Niro did. I know they dont owe us anything, we owe it to them and should enjoy seeing the old faves. We were desperate to see Pacino, De Niro, Pesci and Kietel one last time in a serious film doing some acting rather than bumbling comedy. I respect and accept the fact Scorsese chose to de-age our all time heroes rather than cast younger actors to the determent of the film.
But....that alone doesnt deserve an Oscar.
Paul Newman in Colour of Money was on fire for the whole run time.
I don't know how anyone can say Pitt's performance was better than Pesci's with a straight face. Pitt's performance was entirely ordinary.
shareI agree completely. He played himself. Pesci owned his role. I was blown away by his performance.
The Oscars are just terrible now - it's about 'who is due' and 'we should have given him an award for X so let's give him one for Y now.'
I have a feeling Netflix will file for bankruptcy
shareSORRY TO ITS FANS....BUT,...YAY!
