AGE DIFFERENCE-- hello?!!?

ANyone else find it bizarre to see Zooey playing opposite Jim? I mean he's like 25 years older than her! She should have been dating Jim Carrey's young friend. Why did they cast him as if he was 30? Totally bizarre.

I am more troubled by the lack of basic spelling and grammar skills (there/their/they're, for example) in this thread. You shouldn't be worried about the characters in a movie when you can't even use the proper form of 'there' in a sentence.

They're both at least 10 years over the legal age of consent. Neither one is close to being a senior citizen. I'm sure they both still have their own teeth.

If the age difference bothers you this much then don't watch the movie or get involved with a person or people outside your age group. Just don't expect to think your opinion matters to those that aren't as narrow minded as yourself. Not everything is black and white. There are a myriad of reasons why people do what they do.

Their ages are never stated in the film and since Carey doesn't look old yet, and Deschanel can pass for a wide range of ages (from mid 20s to 30s), its safe to assume that their characters could have much less of an age gap than they do in real life. Also, if they did have the same ages as the actors, it still not that big of a deal.

reply

That's funny. When I saw Carey in this film, my first thought was that he was starting to show his age. On the other hand, I was a bit surprised to see Deschanel in this film, since the year earlier she had played much younger characters in "Tin Man" and "Bridge to Terabithia". Still, I thought she and Carey had great chemistry together, which is more than I can say about Carey and some of his other leading ladies.

Don't you people understand the concept of acting? It means you pretend to be someone else. That can mean you pretend to be different either in personality, looks, age and sometime even in gender. I've seen actors play parts that were much older or younger than their real age. Remember Beverly Hills 90210 where all the "teenagers" were at least 20, and some even close to 30?

So why all of a sudden all this just because two actors have a bit of an age difference?

reply

Agreed, it felt awkward. Like he should have been playing her dad or a good friend or something. But she looks a lot younger than she is, to me she could pass for 22. He looks 45.

I think Allison is suposed to be mid 20´s and Carl mid 30´s, and Jim Carrey can pass like someone around that age. Bye the way in real life J. Carrey's girlfriend Jenny Mac Carthy is almost 11 years younger than him (48 and 37 nowadays), and some of his same age Hollywood actors: Tom Cruise with 16 and a half years younger wife(47..almost 48 and 31), and George Clooney with an 18 year younger girlfriend (48 and 30).

Age difference?? Who cares??

reply

Actally 18 years apart to the date they have the same birthday!!!
Its not totally bizarre my friend married a girl 18 years older then him. If you have a lot in common with a person i don't think age should matter if their legal.

I like to use the divide by 2 plus 7 rule.

Jim Carrey was 46.
Zooey Dechanel was 28.

46/2 + 7 = 30.

Jim's dating-age floor was 30. In other words, dating anyone under the age of 30 could be seen as socially-weird for him.
It'll cause double-looks, whispers behind his back and people might say he's "robbing the cradle."

Zooey was 2 years too young for Jim in this film.

But it was acting, people!
Jim was playing a character in his mid-30s.
He's doesn't look anywhere near 46 so he pulls it off.
Zooey was almost playing herself, a girl in her late 20s.

So it's perfectly fine. If they were dating in real life however....

In addition to the actual age difference, their appearances made the romance look even more unlikely.

While I think he looks fine, Jim Carrey's face shows every bit of his years.

Zooey however, could pass for even younger than her actual age (those ever present bangs contribute a lot to this).

However-

The age difference would be totally irrelevant had there been any actual chemistry between the two. (I saw none)

reply

I did. I was like Zoe Zoe you can do much better than this old dude. Luckily she found JGL a few years later.

Zoey is looking her age lately. And Jim has the same wrinkles now in 2011 as he did in 2008. If they were a real couple it would not have raised any eyebrows. Alot of people fail to realise that women in they're late 20s want stability and financial security in their lives. Alot of late 20s guys, heck even early 30s guys are just not willing to commit to those responsibilities yet.

But since this is a very light hearted movie, none of those things really matter. Besides how many 18yo fathers do you know out there? He is hardly old enough to be her father. I had a friend dating 2 women 12years and 14years younger than him and he is in his early 30s. No one can accuse him of dating girls that he could be a father to. So this age disparity thing is merely an unfounded nitpick on the part of some rather than a majority consensus on what is appropriate or not. In the end, chemistry matters more than age, since age appropriateness does not guarantee a solid relationship.

reply

Well scinetifically he could be their father even if he was 12-14 years older. Depends on when he hit puberty.

And I know quite a few people who've had children at 18, 19 and the like. It's very possible.

Jim Carrey's (and his character) still old. Regardless if there's nothing wrong with his relationship with Zoey he's still old. An old 40 something man.

Well I would say most boys hit puberty at around 14, 12 is really a freak of nature moment to hit puberty especially for boys (ever heard a boy of 12 with a deep voice? lol). But girls are more likely to hit puberty at 12 than boys. Having said that, I don't see why you would make a case for hitting puberty at 12 as a point in favor of your position in this. 12 years is really superfluous, especially if the guy is in his 30-40s and the woman in her 20-30s.

If you are going by the likelihood of men actively and consciously wanting to become fathers at 18, that is very unlikely also. I known guys who didn't even start dating until 20 or so. So seriously, its very rare for a man to have a daughter 18yrs younger than himself, very very rare.

People also fail to factor in that Zoey is no spring chicken herself. Would the debate still hold weight if Jim looked like a young 30something despite being 47? What if Zoey was a prematurely aging Amy Winehouse, or Lindsay Lohan type. The reason why ageists attitudes falter so much in relationship debates, is that they are too dense to understand that a good relationship depends on so many other factors before age comes into it. But to each they're own, I didn't even notice the discrepancy until I read it here. Someone mentioned that Jims age gap was more noticeable in Eternal Sunshine... are you kidding? That was 4 years prior to this movie, and she was much closer in age than Zoey.
